Let me give my 2 cents worth of insight into what the answer might be. My son, who is currently a plebe, lost his grandmother this summer while he was in his third week of Beast. We knew this was a likely scenario before he left, and after some discussion and research, found out that, if it occurred, he would not be able to leave for the funeral. Policy is that it would have to be an immediate family member.
We understood the policy, and communicated the passing of his grandmother to him over the phone. In advance of the phone call we spoke to his TAC, and he made arrangements for the Chaplain to be there for my son. The people at USMA were tremendously supportive of my son during that time. We received two phone calls from his TAC after our conversation, letting us know how he was handling it, which we appreciated very much.
I realize this is now off track, but wanted to finish the thought.
