Does anyone know what the dates are for I-Day and PPW for the summer of 2010.

My son will be attending and we want to make sure that we can attend. I'm worried about the PPW date, as our good friends son (also a Naval Academy Graduate) is getting married on Aug 7th and we would hate to miss it.

Are you saying he has his nomination and a LOA already?

Sorry, I misspoke... My son will hopefully be attending the Naval Academy. He does not yet have his nomination, but we're told his LOA is almost done.

Don't want to jinx anything.

My DS was called by his regional director at USNA today (he finally got his principal to get the last thing he was waiting for to complete his application in - the Academic Information). The first call was to discuss the academy in general with him - apparently his B&G officer had noted in the interview that AF was his first choice. They talked about the opportunities at Navy and my son told him he was definitely interested (he says on a scale of 1-10, AF is a 10, Navy a 9.5, West Point a 9 and every other college a 3 or below)!

Anyways, a couple hours later he got an email advising him to call his "Admissions Director" who told him that he had been approved for an LOA and should receive it in the mail in the next few weeks! He called his B&G officer who had already been informed as well. Yes, he was dancing around the house!

And no, he's not a recruited athlete.

Hey thats awesome id be dancing around the house. Sounds like you had some trouble with the principal too? lol mines giving me the run around though i think he may be a little busy since they found asbestos in the auditorium?

Evidently it all came down to how the principal entered the date on the Candidate Academic Information form. He had tried three times to submit that form in the last month and finally they had him print it out and fax it to the office so that they could go in and figure out he had put in a date as 01 instead of JAN like the form required, which was causing the system to reject it. So they reset it again yesterday and he submitted it today.

My son also retook his CFA this morning with his PE teacher and resubmitted that score as well. Then got his call just a couple hours later when the regional director told him he had taken his packet to the Dean/Admissions office and they'd approved the LOA!

Now he's very very happy and very very relieved, but now seriously stressing between the Navy/Air Force choice (assuming he gets to make it - his AF application is still missing a lot from the school and teachers).

If you don't mind telling - what were his SAT scores?

Thanks,
Murf

His SAT's were just fairly good (he only took them once because most people around here - midwest - don't), but his ACT was a 35 composite, which is where I think the advantage was!

Thats pretty crazy, LOAs usually come as a complete surprise. Well all, if true, there's one less spot we have out of the 1200 we are competing for. It makes it that much more cut throat.

marciemi,

Your son did his application on a packet? I finished everything electronically back in 12 JUN including the BGO interview and got nothing more than an acknowledgement of reception on the CIS.

No, his was done all online as well. That was just the phrasing his regional director used - I'm assuming it was more of a printout of information than an actual physical packet.

I'm kind of waiting on pins and needles too since he hasn't received anything physical in writing yet either. But I can't believe they'd had two different officers call him that day, talk to him about the opportunities there, then send him an email telling him to call his director at the office of admissions and tell him he was approved for an LOA if he actually wasn't. But I'll feel a whole lot better when he has it in his hands - which they told him should be in the "next couple of weeks".

marciemi: Congratulations! Be sure to apply for all nomination sources possible. Of course we are all curious. Your DS must've had some outstanding leadership and academics!

His biggest strength is academics. Full schedule each year (8 classes here), 4 AP's (5 on each exam), 35 ACT, he took 2 college classes last year (Calc 2 & 3) and is taking 2 more this year including more math and Organic Chemistry. 3rd in a class of 420ish. NHS.

Sports - he's played soccer each year, varsity last year, and travel soccer each year, but he's not recruited or anything. He has lots of activities - probably biggest is volunteer hours, and was a class officer, club president, prom committee, etc. Basically a good, solid profile but nothing that jumps out.

He did go to NASS this summer and had an awesome experience there and had a great squad and squad leader. I don't know if that had any impact. (I know they were evaluated). His CFA was also solid but not awesome - 71 BB, 10 pullups, 8.4 shuttle run, 95 situps, 50 pushups, 6:18 mile.

He thought his B&G interview went really well and he really pushed him to get everything in early because he thought he had a chance of getting an LOA with his strong academics. I personally felt he should have a reasonable chance of an appointment eventually, but wasn't expecting anything this early! Oh, and he's also not a minority which makes me even more surprised after reading some of the other threads on this forum!

I really think a lot of it came down to them knowing he wanted AF more. And of course having motivated people going to bat on his behalf. Seems like a lot of people on the boards haven't even gotten their B&G officer to return their first phone call/email yet. Or gotten their regional directors to reply to their questions. When his principal had a problem on a form, my son asked his B&G officer, and had two replies from two different officers at USNA the following morning with help. And evidently they presented his application to the Dean (that's what they told him) which led to the LOA. I've also read (just on these boards) that Navy emphasizes academics the most, which also makes sense for him. He wants to major in chemical or aeronautical engineering and I know they're looking for that.

Finally, his dad and I are West Point grads so maybe they're just trying to put one over on the Army! (And yes, they did ask him why not WP when they called him - he's obviously going to get that question every time from every person!).

And he's been working on nomination stuff non-stop. Just needs to get everyone to give him his letters of recommendation. We're optimistic about that since at least we're not in a super-competitive area. Not cocky, but feeling a whole lot better than if we were in Texas or NY or something! Last year our congressional district had 17 kids trying for the 10 slots for Navy, so I'm hoping if it's similar this year, that he should make the top 50%, especially if he can list the LOA!

LOA is not the goal. Most appointees will not have an LOA.

Sounds like a great candidate Marciemi. I will be very surprised if AF doesn't come through too. Congratulations.

...and unfortunately not everyone with a LOA will get an appointment.

Good luck to everybody!

How would an LOA not get an appointment? something like a DQ medically or not getting a nomination?

I guess either of those. Or of course doing something stupid in the interim!

I think the LOA means they must get a nomination, but it should also give them an advantage in getting one. Medical is a whole different ball game. I got early acceptance to WP many years ago (not called LOA's then) and they even arranged the VP nom for me (didn't have to do the work myself!), but I fought Dodmerb all the way even through R-day at WP and again when it was time to be commissioned. Apples and oranges unfortunately.

Congrats again, marciemi. Sounds like a whale of a good candidate. AFA will pounce on him, too. So, why not WP?

I am guessing here that perhaps the dean reviewed his packet and authorized the LOA because Admissions Board has not met yet.

LOA means an appt is coming provided candidate fulfills the other requirements and stays the course academically. Medical is probably the most common reason LOA's do not translate into appointment.
