USNA folks call USMA folks “woops.”
A little service academy trivia .... why do we call West Point cadets "woops?"
Contrary to the common assumption that its because of the initials WP... it really comes from the fact that the jackets worn by the flying monkeys in the Wizard of Oz areWest Point uniforms, and the flying monkeys sound like "woop, woop, woop,...."
(Before someone goes to SNOPEs etc, and tries to debunk this story, I heard it from one of my squad leaders plebe summer, and I'm sticking with it).
These are, of course, the more familiar, "friendly" nicknames. As a Marine, I have been called and heard a lot worse
OMG, say it ain't so ! All well deserved, but used "with all due respect !"
(Seriously, I've got alot of respect for the Marines...)
As an aside, there is a lot of good natured (and sometimes less than good natured) rivalry among the Services, including the use of nicknames and slang. However, readers of the Forum should understand that these terms of endearment should only be used by those who have served. Participation in this type of banter but non-veterans (including, and maybe even particularly Candidates ) is discouraged.
