DS opened today's mail and NROTC is pushing him to move on his plan "B", NROTC scholarship. He has already accepted USNA and has no plan to go NROTC, but he has not declined NROTC. NROTC #1 University is UC Berkeley and they will not notify of acceptance until 3/26, days before the NROTC paperwork deadline of 3/31. At every turn we have been advised to preserve options in case of any awful medical developments that would derail I-day. What are other families doing regarding "plan B"? Asking, here, because it's in line with the thread--DS earned the NROTC scholarship and technically has the right to retain/keep open the option, at least until May 1.

I don't understand a scenario where you are medically unable to perform at USNA but able to perform at NROTC. I would think an injury of some sort would disqualify you for both.

I-day is June 25 which is way after the May 1 date. Holding onto a NROTC scholarship, knowing that you can not use it if you are going to USNA on June 25 just keeps the opportunity for another person to gain a scholarship. Just my thoughts. Others would be happy just to get the scholarship.

Others may disagree..its been hotly discussed on this Forum. Yes, he has earned the NROTC scholarship, but one he has committed to USNA and "has no plan to go NROTC," I think it is wholly inappropriate and unethical to hold on to the Offer. This is not from the perspective of other candidates that may have the opportunity to get the slot, but from a US Navy manninng and officer accession perspective -- USNA and NROTC both have a mission of producing officers...and one holding the ROTC opening when he doesn't have any intent to attend is selfish. (I have different view if the person is undecided...but you have stated there is "no intent" and he is just holding it "just in case.")

Does anyone have a read on the effect the Covid 19 is having on appointments. My DS is a college reapplication and is attending Greystone in Texas. Also I don’t see any AL appointments. I wonder if this is significant?

Admissons is still doing its job. Placing the Class of 2024 was specifically mentioned in the Supe's public statement the other day. (It is available on another thread, or just Google it). They are still shooting for the April 15 target.

WRT Alabama appointments.. By now its very likely that there are Appointments from Alabama --they are just not posted.

Yes - hunkered down...but DS still holding out hope. He hasn't received a rejection to date.

River Hills - just outside Milwaukee. He received USNA & USAFA noms from Grothman / USNA & USMA noms from Baldwin / USAFA from Johnson.

Update: DS is going to decline NROTC and Berkley, U of WA, U of CO tomorrow.

One thing that irks me--several threads have NROTC hopeful parents talking about scholarships as if they don't go back into the national pool. No. They give it to the next in line. That's what will happen next week with DS's scholarship, less than one month after DS's receipt of USNA BFE. I get it that parents want to know ASAP that your candidate got a scholarship, but so did we. We had NROTC jerked away not once, but TWICE. ISR was rescinded in early January because DS wouldn't tell recruiter he would take ISR over USNA, and a second time when he got a "non-selection" email in error. In my opinion, he earned the right to research and be sure he understood any hidden costs of declining before 5/1.

I am a re-applicant but go to UC Berkeley and am a member of AFROTC. I also have friends in NROTC. Feel free to message me about any questions you have!
