The Gunsmith Thread

Winner. I can't find the "H" anywhere, either. Also the "U.S.M.C." is a fake. Even on rebuilds, the Marine Corps never stamped those rifles with anything.
Some unscrupulous seller tried to add to the value of the rifle, by adding some "provenance".

Just buy the gun. Don't ever buy "the story" !

Damn, that is sweet. What would something like that sell for?

It depends. I would pay $750.00 for one like this, but no more. They were cranking out 60,000 of these every month in 1944. They are most certainly not rare, but they are fabulous shooters. If you don't already have one and want one real bad, I can see going more.

Some collectors are crazy about these, however. I have seen examples like this auction for as much as $2,500.00.

I have a muzzle erosion gauge and checked that. I don't remember what it read, but it was well within spec.
As for throat erosion, I don't have one of those gauges for the M1.

I check headspace with my go gauge and if I have little to no muzzle erosion, I always assume that there isn't appreciable throat erosion. I could get a $75 throat erosion gauge, but when I shoot 8 rounds through the same hole, that is a good test already. You know, for a Marine. ;)

LOL
I mean, if the groups aren't tight, it must be the gun, right??

Clearly it's the gun's fault most of the time. Just like drivers and putters with golfers.

So I get an update from the ATF because I like to know what are friends over there are up to. Cause they're so helpful...
Anyway, I read the below linked article which I would file under,"Don't make a federal case out of it".
In a nutshell, a Jamestown, NY man was arrested more than 5g (<50g) of meth and a stolen shotgun. The Feds took over from there....The perp is looking at 10 years minimum!

1st. of all, hats off to the men & women of the Jamestown PD for a great arrest & another for their Chief for going federal instead of NYS Gov. Cuomo's turn-em-loose policies. Perp plead guilty looking at 10 years minimum! As the minimum!..."If you can't do the time...don't do the crime" as the saying goes, but I'd bet he never thought that he was committing a federal offense when he took a drive that nite.

Heard lots of MOS in NYPD taking their cases Federal instead of state...usually ends up w/the perps crying as they realize they're going federal...No joke, it's hard to look hard as the patrol car drives into a federal facility when you're in the back seat w/the cuffs on thinking it's just a state crime. It's suck to suck, as the kids say.
You never know if the Feds are involved...& it's makes a difference...a big difference.
Be safe to LE MOS out there...

Everything is the color of peanut butter, now. Drop that thing in the sand and you can forget it. Genius.
I had a camo ballpoint pen once. Dropped it in the grass, never saw it again. ;)

I think I found it. Speaking of pens, I was at Walter Reed yesterday for a tune up and of course had to fill out forms. The black US Government ink pens are chained to the clip boards. Highly piferable I suppose.

M1903 Springfield with some Unertl glass on top. That's Marine Corps Cool.

Not a genuine Marine Sniper, but it might as well be. Exact same Unertl 8x scope (just not marked "Marine Sniper"). New Criterion barrel. Late pre-war, high-number Springfield receiver and pre-war USGI C-Stock. I found a barreled receiver that was already drilled for the rear scope mount and which had been part of a .35 Whelan sporter rifle. So, I used that receiver so-as not to ruin an original M1903 and I added a new barrel, found a Unertl 8x and took the stock from another M1903 I had.

I had a customer totally fubar his AR-15 chambered for 5.56. He shot one round of .300 blackout through it.

One.

I had to cut the bottom off of the upper receiver to get the barrel off. He is lucky to be alive, so I told him to go and buy a lottery ticket.
I will come back to post photos. Stay tuned!
