What is the likelihood of a candidate that receives a congressional nomination to receive an appointment to the USAFA? My DS received his congressional nomination today. Thank you

The simple answer would be 1 in 10 since MOCs can nominate 10 candidates for each appointment vacancy that they have. The real answer is that it depends a lot on a multitude of things. How competitive is your district? How competitive is the candidate compared to the rest of the pool? So many variables that is isn’t possible to give an easy answer to your question.
Receiving a nomination means that you’re still in the game, so it is a positive thing.

I attended an admissions briefing given by admissions advisors over the summer and if remember correctly they had a slide that said there are typically 4,000 qualified candidates (meet basic requirements, have a nomination, medical cleared etc) and out of that roughly 1,000 are appointed and accepted. Not too sure how accurate these figures are, but they came directly from Air Force Admissions Advisors. That would mean a 1/4 probability assuming your DS is currently a "qualified candidate".

In some districts its 100% chance of getting a nomination. In others, lower. Completely depends on the district.

As far as chance of appointment, some MoCs rank their nominations and I have been told (though I can't verify) that if they rank you #1 you will get an appointment assuming you meet medical, pass CFA and meet minimum academic requirements. All in all, the nomination is one part of the process so its worth celebrating.

Congrats and complete the application process, CFA, DoDMERB etc and then work Plan B in the meantime.

Straight from a briefing at USAFA in March of this year.

Calculating the probability of a service academy appointment for a specific candidate is far more complex than for a regular college. Even excluding recruited athletes and diversity candidates, two equally qualified candidates can have dramatically different chances of appointment.

However, the nomination is one important hurdle and increases the chances from 0% to some positive number.

So my DS found out today that he not only received a nomination from a US Congressman, but also US Senator. Does having two nominations increase his chances of an appointment? Thank you all for the feedback.

You could say it does. Basically now they have two different people they can slot you under. One person from your senator and one person from your congressman are GOING to get an appointment (if any of them are fully qualified of course). And so now you can get either one. But if you don't get that first pick, you can still get picked up once they fill up slots with all the nominations and still have like 400 left to go. But as with everything in the crazy world of academy applications ... it depends.

DS saw in the application system that he received a nomination to USAFA from one of our US Senators (Capito-WV). They put his nom in the system but he hasn’t been officially notified yet...

Elected officials may or may not notify applicants. If it’s in the portal, it’s official, as USAFA has apparently received the slate.

How do you know if your district is competitive or not? I’m a first time applicant and know of nobody else who has gone through this process, that’s why I am wondering.

You really can't be too sure. For example I live near a military base and my district is of decent size. However most of district is also farmers but I also know alot of farming kids who want to go into the military. See the problem here? We can't tell how competive my district is because while it's mostly farm land but there could also be alot of applicates still.

Now if you live near a military base, large cities, or one of the academies your district is most likely more competitive than others. You can't change this so don't worry. Even if your district isn't competitive if one other person is applying then it's competive. Focus on scoring as high as you can on what you can do.
