Army ROTC 2nd Board Results!

Thank you so much. Another question, since I know you are very knowledgeble, I know that the scholarship doesn't mean a guaranteed acceptance, so how can I use the scholarship to become accepted to my university?
Great question. As has been discussed in the past - you now hold a very valuable scholarship. There are many stories on here about people calling up the PMS/ROO of a school that they are applying to and seeing if it can help.

Here is what my DS did. He was awarded a 4-YR on the 1st Board last year. He had already been accepted to 1 of his 3 schools. He sent a personal email to the PMS at the other 2 schools he was considering. Within a week - he had acceptance letters from both. I know in one case, the PMS went to the admissions office and lobbied on his behalf. He also played a major part in getting him admitted to the School of Engineering at a very prestigious (TAMU) engineering school. Not saying it works, but definitely worth a try. Don't send out a canned letter, tell the PMS why you want to attend the school and be a part of the battalion.

Yes -it matters at some schools.

I would love some insight. My daughter was boarded in October. She was not an award recipient for October or January. 29 ACT, perfect GPA, JROTC BC, accepted into Johns Hopkins (this is a blessing), PMS said she had an excellent interview and felt she would be a stand out. If anyone could provide us suggestions on where to go from here. Congratulations to the winners this time!
@KBMom I would continue to have your daughter reach out to her top three schools so that they know she is still interested. As in years past, there will be winners that will decline the scholarship for an SA appointment or for an AFROTC or NROTC scholarship. The scholarships that are not remaining are usually forwarded to the Brigades, who then push them out to the Battalions. As a result, on campus scholarships will likely be available.

My DD was not selected for the first or second board, but at the same time, she was blessed to be selected for that was selected for AFROTC and NROTC-MO scholarships. Keeping options open, while staying hopeful is, not easy, but life is often bumpy.

First step is to reach out to the ROO at where you want to go. We plan to do that tomorrow at DS's #1 choice where he was deferred. They will let you know if they have any sway with the admissions office. Some do, some don't. Depends on the school. If the ROO isn't helpful, I would reach out to your admissions counselor to let them know. It can't hurt.

Happy to report that DS was awarded a 3-year scholarship. Believe me, he is ecstatic and we are happy. High on his SOI list were UNC- Chapel Hill and University of Tennessee. He was not awarded there. Are those big and/or coveted programs? He was instead awarded to a great University of California school that most people would think attracts surfers versus soldiers!

Congrats - Don't give up on UNC or UT. If that is where your DS wants to go, request a transfer to the school he wants to attend. Cadet Command is very accommodating with transfers. Good luck.

It sounds like your daughter has great stats. How was her fitness test? I assume it was great if she did JROTC. I can only tell you what I had if that helps at all. I took the most rigorous course load I could at my school (12 AP's and 6 dual credit classes, I was a multi-sport varsity athlete making it to states and medaling, a 30 ACT and I had leadership positions both in school and in my community. I do not have a perfect unweighted GPA (3.91) but I have a weighted GPA of 4.5 (though I know they go by unweighted). I bet she will get one at the next board.

I would add that the survey she took can apparently be the secret sauce. You don’t know how they scored her answers. Chin up, though! She sounds amazing and will be a success no matter what happens. 🤗

Does anyone have any stats on our chances of winning a scholarship on the third selection board? I am aware that the first/October board was the most competitive. I was wondering if chances are more promising and something to be optimistic about for the last selection board or not? Or has the information on applicants left been released? Thank you

Congrats to everyone who won in the second board!!

@emmarose - It is very hard to look at stats for AROTC. There are many things about you packet that we don't have access to (Essays, CBEF, Interview). With that being said, the 3rd Board historically awards the most scholarships. @Montana State Army ROTC is compiling some data on the 2nd Board stats, but again - they can be misleading. Keep your chin up. The 3rd Board will be here soon!

In the meantime - is there anything you can do to improve your application? You have already been Boarded and your application will not be reviewed again, BUT you can increase your PFT and standardized test scores to improve your OML.

For everyone who wasn’t selected today... out of high school not selected, went to college and applied again (nrotc) not selected, enlisted nuclear option and served on submarines and applied again...finally selected. That’s not three boards but three YEARS. Keep believing and improving.... my DS selected today....of course gives me chills... today isn’t an end it’s just another day.

My DS received an email offering the 2yr military junior college scholarship. Did all applicants passed over by this 2nd board receive this, or is it a sign he is at the end of the line in his quest for at least a 3yr scholarship? Thanks!

2-yr or SMP?

Thank you! I appreciate you giving information for everyone because you are very informative and it is always helpful. I can improve my PFT to get a perfect score so I will, thank you.

Great attitude. Plenty of options open.

We are in the same situation with slightly higher SAT scores. Have high hopes for third board or offer once she is on campus. With only 1200 +\- total scholarships given out this far (based on what I’ve read here) that leaves 60% of the scholarships remaining. Congratulations on Johns Hopkins. That is a huge achievement that your daughter should be very proud of.
@KBMom and @NickHarlan - I don't know if you saw this, but I posted this back in December:

Back in 2014 I remember thinking our DD had a really good shot at the AROTC scholarship during the first board. She had a super-scored 800 CR and 740 math on the SAT at that time,, an unweighted GPA of 3.96 and weighted at 4.88 with her honors course and ranked #1 in her HS class. She was 4 year team captain for volleyball, 2 year first team all-state volleyball team and varsity letter winner in 3 more sports. She also has several other leadership positions and EC's outside of school. She had gotten a NROTC scholarship very early in their scholarship cycle. She didn't get the AROTC Scholarship during the first board, or the 2nd board. She finally got a 4-year on the 3rd board to her #1 School. As I wondered about it, I figured she must have scored lower on the CBEF Survey. At the time she went through the process, I believe it was worth 250 points out of the 1400 scores of the total (equal to the score of the ACT/SAT, more than the PMS Interview score and more than the Physical Fitness test). You will never know the results of that, so it is hard to say. I know it's hard to be patient, but keep working on other civilian scholarship applications as you await the results of the other AROTC boards and USMA.

This is a great data point - many applicants RACE through the CBEF to finish the application. My guess is that the CBEF is the the deciding factor on many apps. Thanks for posting @USMAROTCFamily

I got boarded for the 1st and 2nd selection boards and was not picked up for either, but I received an email earlier today stating that I had been selected for the 2-year MJC scholarship. I'm still deciding whether or not to accept the offer, but if I were to decline it, would it hurt my chances during the 3rd board? The letter said that I am not out of the applicant pool until I accept the offer but I want to know if this will make me look bad?

I am not well versed on the 2 Year JC Scholarships. I would hold off as the 3rd Board has the most scholarships awarded. @Montana State Army ROTC @MohawkArmyROTC - can you provide some guidance here?
