The confusion is due to the academies taking all types of students. Some are from prep and might have lower or higher scores or gpa, but the academies have contracts to take 50 applicants regardless. Some are legacy kids. Some are recruited athletes. Some are from really small districts with few applicants. The people on here saying you need this score, or shoot for a perfect score, are possibly from heavily applied districts which make it very competitive. The academies also try to look like the county they serve, so color, gender, and other factors come into play. But you are only competing with kids from your district. You should talk with your Field Force representative to get a better understanding of what GPA, ACT scores, and competitive applications look like in your district and state. You can also do a quick view of what PSAT scores qualify for National Merit Scholar in your state - example, its 223 in California and 1,982 kids qualified (very competitive), but in Alaska its 213 and only 36 made it. That means if you are an AK resident with a 1400 SAT, you have a better chance of acceptance than a kid from CA with a 1500. It's more complicated than that, but that's the basics, as told to me by our area FFR, and the Lt Col USAFA grad who coaches my kids sports (from AK).No offense I’m just confused why you keep saying u need a 1400 to get in. The average sat score for the academy is a 1320 so shouldn’t a 1320 as well as a good all around resume give u about a 50% chance of admission? Also I looked at some stats and 55% of qualified females got in. So what is qualified? Obviously my goal is to score as high as possible but I’m involved in a ton of extra curricular activities as well as the largest class load my school offers so a 1600 is a very unrealistic goal. I only have a tiny bit of free time a day to study so I am trying to make use of it best and get an honest target that is achieveable in 12 days as well as keep my grades up and keep my athletics on point. Also isn’t class rank a pretty important factor? Thanks in advance.
Our personal experience this year and of our nominees, one girl admitted USMA and USAFA with a 32 ACT - Hell of a runner and athlete (perfect fit IMHO), and one boy admitted USMA, rejected by USAFA, 35 ACT but perfect math portion, piano no sport (used a college advisor.) We had 8 nominees for all the academies, and several kids were admitted to multiple ones. Our FFR advised to submit to all of the academies. My DD was recruited by USAFA soccer, scored a 1350 SAT, Salutatorian with 5.25 GPA and all AP / IB credits. She chose a state school so she could apply her almost 60 hrs of college credit. On a side note, we meet USCGA grads every year, and they are the happiest and most satisfied service grads that we see. Don't forget them and the Merchant Marines.
