chances + advice

No offense I’m just confused why you keep saying u need a 1400 to get in. The average sat score for the academy is a 1320 so shouldn’t a 1320 as well as a good all around resume give u about a 50% chance of admission? Also I looked at some stats and 55% of qualified females got in. So what is qualified? Obviously my goal is to score as high as possible but I’m involved in a ton of extra curricular activities as well as the largest class load my school offers so a 1600 is a very unrealistic goal. I only have a tiny bit of free time a day to study so I am trying to make use of it best and get an honest target that is achieveable in 12 days as well as keep my grades up and keep my athletics on point. Also isn’t class rank a pretty important factor? Thanks in advance.
The confusion is due to the academies taking all types of students. Some are from prep and might have lower or higher scores or gpa, but the academies have contracts to take 50 applicants regardless. Some are legacy kids. Some are recruited athletes. Some are from really small districts with few applicants. The people on here saying you need this score, or shoot for a perfect score, are possibly from heavily applied districts which make it very competitive. The academies also try to look like the county they serve, so color, gender, and other factors come into play. But you are only competing with kids from your district. You should talk with your Field Force representative to get a better understanding of what GPA, ACT scores, and competitive applications look like in your district and state. You can also do a quick view of what PSAT scores qualify for National Merit Scholar in your state - example, its 223 in California and 1,982 kids qualified (very competitive), but in Alaska its 213 and only 36 made it. That means if you are an AK resident with a 1400 SAT, you have a better chance of acceptance than a kid from CA with a 1500. It's more complicated than that, but that's the basics, as told to me by our area FFR, and the Lt Col USAFA grad who coaches my kids sports (from AK).
Our personal experience this year and of our nominees, one girl admitted USMA and USAFA with a 32 ACT - Hell of a runner and athlete (perfect fit IMHO), and one boy admitted USMA, rejected by USAFA, 35 ACT but perfect math portion, piano no sport (used a college advisor.) We had 8 nominees for all the academies, and several kids were admitted to multiple ones. Our FFR advised to submit to all of the academies. My DD was recruited by USAFA soccer, scored a 1350 SAT, Salutatorian with 5.25 GPA and all AP / IB credits. She chose a state school so she could apply her almost 60 hrs of college credit. On a side note, we meet USCGA grads every year, and they are the happiest and most satisfied service grads that we see. Don't forget them and the Merchant Marines.

At the end of the day it comes down to a risk reward calculation. If you can afford to spend time to improve why wouldn’t you?

The SA process is one that proves you leave nothing to chance, no points on the board and no advantage left to be had.

If by chance you skate through to a nomination and appointment you will likely have your a** handed to you plebe year.
A portion of my remark is snarky and I walk that snarky portion back. Do your best. Leave nothing to chance.

Not snarky. The Truth. Certainly resonates with me!

Agree with bettering the SAT score. That is clearly an archilles heel for now.

I like the leadership, engagement, competitive level of basketball.
Can't really tell on track & field, at the least you can check that letter box and YOY engagement, times will indicate competitiveness.
Good start with the other usual suspects - StuCo, NHS.....as the world opens up, think about how you can lead and make a difference! What activities or cross pollinate - how about Jocks and Smocks: Exercise and Art for mental health kickoff 2021-2022 school year! Meet in the gym! a mixer of your sport and the fine arts club (get it? art smocks?). Just brainstorming.

Are you good enough to play D1 sports or a desirable demographic? If not your chances are always at best fair.

To give you your best chance up test scores as everyone else says.

Work on plans B, C, D .. ZZ

What are your goals? Is the Academy the end game or is service as a military officer?

If you want the service academy / corps of cadets experience consider
USMMA - though with the USAF shenanigans of late I might think hard about this - also they have a somewhat limited set of degrees
SMC - all good choices, though UNG doesn't offer Airforce - prices can be breathtaking high. That said my '22 (Citadel) between Navy and Citadel Scholars is almost free.

Hey thanks for advice. Also what do you mean by “YOY engagement, times will indicate competitiveness”. All these acronyms confuse me thanks

Maybe I’m a desirable demographic because I’m a female. And as of now I’m not d1 talent but I just started with track and my numbers are good enough to be recruited at the d2 level already so you never know there. As for basketball I’m being recruited for d3 currently. And the service academy isn’t my all or nothing dream, free college and the chance to be apart of something bigger then myslef really intrigued me. Also my dad and brother went to usmma and I have no disire to go there, they don’t have my major and I do not want to spend any time on a boat. But thanks for advice, my goal right now is a 1450.

No I appreciate the honesty, it really seems my sat is too low for a solid shot of getting in. My brother went to a prep school and said out of the prep school most of his friends who got in had at least a 1300, so my goal should be higher than that for sure.

Year over year; it is nice you have track/xc varsity participation for 2 years and lettered 2 years, plus i'm assuming you will have 3 years with grade 12 added. Times - meaning, measurable by time like swimming , or erg scores - uniform and comparable times to know how competitive you are.
Good plan for improving your test scores! Best of luck and hope to hear good results in follow up posts!
