That's how the "new" system is supposed to work... There is little benefit to putting people into a position that they don't want to be in. With all the talk about Service Assignment v. Service "selection" as we had it way back in, the approach and perspective is different, but for the most part, good performance is rewarded. His company did very well. All but 2 getting their first pick! And those two received their 2nd. No sadness or disappointments.
He was actually more worried for getting drafted to Marines, than subs. He said that Marines had to draft some Mids. Due to lack of ‘22’s having a PROTRAMID, and leatherneck being particularly awful.
Interesting. My 2/C did 30 days at MAGTF - Camp LeJunne and it was a huge disappointment for him and the other mids. The Marines had recently come back from some place and were preparing to go to Okinawa so there was only one day of training exercises. No range or weapons. The air part of it consisted of a 10 minute helicopter ride. The officers were all buried in paperwork. A whole lot of boredom. My DS was pretty excited about Marines before that and it turned him off. Hadn't heard Leatherneck was particularly awful. He said that Marines had to draft some Mids. My apologies for my sarcasm coming off as a serious post.I don't have a dog in this fight but it's entertaining and like others I'm watching and not working. Got into the weeds of USNAINST_1302_5L Midshipmen Service Assignment. As written, 'live stream' is not an option.

That’s what he said about Marines. They were short and needed bodies. I inquired more, wondering how they would pick them up if they hadn’t done any of the screeners. I inquired bc my guy has not done a single one. Never expressed any interest in Marines. But was a track/football/wrestler, so wondered if it would have been from his fitness level. He said nope, they need bodies. That's how the "new" system is supposed to work... There is little benefit to putting people into a position that they don't want to be in. I want to hear more about the Marine draft.... I find it troubling that a Service that presents as an elite force will take Midshipman that really don't want to be there. Way before my time, but I didn't think that USMC took draftees during Vietnam , did they ? Certainly any person drafted into Marine Corps expressed some interest in USMC, didn't they ? I thought I read here that in prior year, USMC wouldn't even take someone that put something other than USMC or SEAL as their first choice.
No apologies necessary.... It's the internet and I can't see your face or hear the tone... Having been through selection processes (military and civilian) that are public and potentially painful (MD Residency selection) I can see both sides of it.My apologies for my sarcasm coming off as a serious post.
Yes, I’m low profile here with no record of controversial posts. Also, I teach high school. Public and painful are my middle names. No apologies necessary.... Now I’m really seeing that tongue jammed in your cheek.Yes, I’m low profile here with no record of controversial posts. Also, I teach high school. Public and painful are my middle names.
My class did not have a Marine draft, but they did pull a few to Marine Aviation. At the time our class was not authorized eye surgery, so pilot wasn’t super competitive. We had 2-3 Mids who wanted to fly Marine Corps but missed the ASTB but a point or two. They had done leatherneck as well. Not sure now, but at the time the USMC ASTB scores were slightly higher (is that true today?). So they moved those 2-3 Mids based upon their preference. There was a Marine draft the class after mine. It was about 10 Marines. Most had put SEALS first and Marines second. A few others had done Leatherneck and done well. They had it behind SWO. It has happened, but it’s small in number, fairly rare and the Marines would rather go short than draft.Wasn’t aware of a Marine draft. The Marine Detachment on the Yard recruits very well is consistently are forced to turn down some talented mids who list it as their first pick. Perhaps mids who listed Marines as 2nd preference recieved it instead of their 1st pick, but to my knowledge they must have at least had it listed to be considered. What I have heard of was mids getting assigned Marine aviation over Navy if they had Navy listed first. And generally successful completion of Leatherneck is a requirement, though this can be waived.
I agree, someone who does not enthusiastically want to be a Marine should not be a Marine.
Going by what DD told me (which wasn’t much): They were evaluated on just about everything they did. Land nav, O-course, other evolutions, etc. A folder (dossier?) was filled up for each mid. At least one copy ended up on the Yard, because a Marine officer pulled one out while DD was talking to him. He perused it and made a comment about her chances of getting USMC.what does it mean to do Leatherneck well? IOW, what does a mid need to show during Leatherneck to be ranked high by the Marines (hope this isn’t a thread hijack)?
My DS was 1 of the 2. Sub drafted. Not his second choice either. At least he was given a heads up from the CO this morning. Gave him time to make the mental shift and let go of his top choices. He is looking towards his new unexpected future with a great attitude. We are very proud of his maturity especially since almost everyone else in their company did get what they wanted. Hasn’t been the easiest last 24 hours as a mom but Proud he has chosen to accept his assignment and look forward to the opportunities it will provide.Actually prepping for beers I guess
Celebration tonight for the whole class. On the Yard. Don’t know if that’s normal but glad to hear they will be there and not out knocking on annapolitans doors

I will sleep well tonight…my Mid is happy
Best of luck to your DS. Great attitude and maturity by him. No doubt he will do well and lead his Sailors extremely well. He knows above all else, they deserve to be led the right way, regardless of his dream sheet. My DS was 1 of the 2. Sub drafted. Not his second choice either. I have all of those in my heart today. I’ve read of a few on the parent pages. Lots of thoughts roll around in my brain…but ultimately, none of them matter. My DS was 1 of the 2. Sub drafted. I admire his sense of maturity and fortitude. And above all, his sense of duty. All the makings of an outstanding officer who’ll indeed lead his sailors well.My DS was 1 of the 2. Sub drafted. Not his second choice either.
I know several that wanted Marines and were not chosen. I saw a graph of the Firstie's preferences for Service Selection and both the Pilot and Marine categories looked like there were not enough spots for all those who wanted those communities...unless I read the graph wrong...I find it hard to believe that there would ever be a Marine draft. They have all they need coming through OCS. At least that's how it has been in the past.
I'm with @Old Navy BGO on this one. The Corps doesn't want people that don't want to be there. Maybe sometimes with the Enlisted ranks, (because they have yet to learn how great it is to be a Marine and cut them some slack until they get their minds right)....
.....but not with them-there-occifers.
