Clueless mom here. Thanks, all, helping me figure this out.Hit the deck and give us 20 !!!
We were all little grasshoppers at one point or anotherClueless mom here. Thanks, all, helping me figure this out.
Please know I was only joking! Sometimes that gets lost in the written word.Clueless mom here. Thanks, all, helping me figure this out.
I got the "40%" from multiple sources. It can vary from 30-40%.Says who? My training with admissions just last summer addressed this specifically. Straight from admissions. Attending doesn’t significantly increase your likelihood of an appointment.
40 pct means roughly 500 in each appointed class attended NASS. And that’s IF everyone who attended, was ultimately offered an appointment. And that isn’t the case. You chances are not ‘much higher of being accepted in the fall’ if you attend.
A highly qualified candidate, for example, who lives in the area and is able to visit on their own, isn’t their target audience for this program.
Tons and tons of discussion about this. Search the forums. But assuming they aren’t interested bc they weren’t offered a spot at NASS does a disservice to your son. Please encourage him to continue. You may be pleasantly surprised!!
BTW, NASS has 3 sessions. Don’t recall their numbers off the top of my head. But it’s not a lot. No where near as big as appointments offered. And both of my current Mids know very few buddies who attend. MOST didn’t.
*Both my boys went to NASS. One had ONE appointed from his squad, the other had none. 40pct cannot work mathematically
I would suggest all Candidates and Parents take what you hear from "other grads" with a grain of salt. First, USNA and USMA Admissions are often very different. Second, the fact that 40% of each class may have attended NASS does not necessarily equate to a "better chance of Admission" -- NASS is first and foremost an awareness program -- trying to attract those top notch kids that may not even be aware of or understand what the Naval Academy is. As I've said here several times-that kid who grew up on banks of the Severn and has spent his life watching the Naval Academy, isn't the target audience -he/she knows what they are getting into. The 2nd source are the multiple Academy grads (all services) I work with. One LTC I work with helped run the USMA SLE. He said that your chances are increased by approx. 30% if you attend the SLE (aka Summer Seminar). I have a USNA who also said the same thing. All six academy grads (all services) attended their respective "summer seminars".
I got the "40%" from multiple sources. It can vary from 30-40%.
1st source is the rejection letter my son received from the USNA: Summer Seminar is a great program designed to provide students' insight into the life of a midshipman. However, it is not a prerequisite for admission. Each year, more than 60% of the students we admit from high school will have not attended Summer Seminar. We will offer opportunities in the fall for seniors to participate in Candidate Visit Weekends, which provide a similar experience, as well as Candidate Day Tours. Another opportunity to get first-hand experience of life at USNA includes summer sports camps, which are hosted by the Naval Academy Athletic Association. More information concerning sports camps may be found at www.navysports.com.

Also, ‘more than 60 pct of direct admits’ doesn’t equate to ‘40 pct of the brigade attended summer seminar’.I got the "40%" from multiple sources. It can vary from 30-40%.

I applied to Summer STEM on March 17 and am having the same problem. Not sure if it means you didn't get in or if they are just late.I know applicants are told they’ll be contacted by 4/15, but I’m curious….
Anyone else still awaiting word on NASS?
Applied a couple days after it opened in January. Thanks!
My son is in exact same boat as yours...applied for SS 1/15, attended CVW and hasn't heard anythingi had two DSs apply for SS,in january. one DS got denial email april 14.the other has not heard anything about SS,yet in early february he was invited to CVW.and he attended that in early march.
he has been patiently waiting.
any advice? he was thinking of contacting admissions. ?
My son did not get accepted into summer seminar and he is a Plebe 2025. He did do the summer STEM camp after Freshman year and the rowing camp after Junior year. Look into one of the sports camps to get him onto campus if you are able. I have heard many theories about the whys and wherefores of selection, but all I know is you keep moving forward until you hear the final "No". It was a long road for us and I truly never thought he would get accepted after rounds with DODMERB. We did not get the final acceptance until May of last year. If your son really wants this keep putting one foot in front of the other. You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.Just received email, son was denied. Seems to be a trend with us applying early, USAFA Summer camp 2021, USNA Summer Camp 2022, USMA Summer Camp 2021, applied early, all denied. Looks like ROTC or enlisting or something else for my son.
