2027 State Nominations Thread

Hey everyone. I had a question regarding how many nominees Senators can nominate and have at each service academy. I was looking at the candidate's Senator Toomey nominated last year from his website, and there were 20 total people, but USAFA only had 2, while USMMA had 6. I thought the limit for each academy was 5? And why only 2 to USAFA? Any clarification is appreciated :)

Hey @nicksand18
Someone with far more knowledge could do a better job of explaining this, but I’ll give it a try. I believe last year Senator Toomey was celebrating 20 students from Pennsylvania headed to service academies but drawing from many different nominating sources. I think this year Senator Toomey can nominate 10 candidates to USNA, 10 to USMA and 10 to USAFA, each academy will select one individual from the slate to charge to Toomey. The other nine who are qualified might receive VP, presidential, or alternate MOC nom or go on to compete in the national pool. Each MOC can have 5 people attending each academy in any given year charged to them, so most years the MOC can present a slate of 10 names but some years they can present 2 slates of 10 names for the two open spots.
I hope this makes some sense. My understanding is based off of the plethora of information I’ve gleaned from this forum’s brain trust. My ability to explain it may be lacking.😉

Okay thank you!! Your explanation is great. I know one of the people he listed though ended up going to ERAU, not USAFA, that's why Im confused about whether he was celebrating the nominations he had given out or something else.

There’s another person from the last cycle who received a nom in PA and didn’t report to the SA. I think these things happen every so often. Unfortunately I don’t think the MOC always adds an extra slate because a few years down the line there will be no openings in the class. Or maybe they do, I guess each office handles it in the way they see fit.

First thing, if this is the link you are looking at, focus on the headline:

A Senator or Representative can have a TOTAL of 5 appointees CHARGED to them at any one time, spread out over 4 classes, at each of these SAs, USMA, USNA, USAFA. All those others? They may have been nominees on his slate (list), but their appointments are CHARGED to other nom sources, such as Presidential, JROTC/ROTC, other service-connected, the ones set aside for prior enlisted, VP, etc., because those appointees have multiple noms

The SA also has the option of offering appointments to other fully qualifed nominees on that slate, but the appointments are charged to other nom authorities they control.

Note that if it’s a year when 2 of 5 slots are available, the Senator can submit 2 slates, each with up to 10 names.

Elected officials will often gather up all their constituents, regardless of their nom source and where the appointment is charged, because it makes a heftier press release.

If you haven’t yet done so, read the pinned post at the top of the Nominations forum.

USMMA, as a non-DoD SA, has some different nom rules.

Thanks so much ma'am! Lots of useful information. It's very interesting to learn about all of these things while applying, so different than any other university application.

@keymaster_479, congrats! I tried to DM you but it says I cannot. Based on an exchange I saw over a month ago, I *think* there is a minimum amount of messages you have to post before being allowed to DM. Anyways just wanted to trade towns etc. After you make a few more posts, DM me!

For all of the NJ Residents -

Good afternoon _______ ,

Senator Booker will make his decision on nominations on January 31st. If you are selected we will contact you directly at that time.
Did you get this as an email? I had my interview in November but did not get this info

To send or receive DMs: 5 posts, 7 days, effective after next system refresh.

I am thinking that this person probably personally contacted Booker’s office and received this reply. DD did not receive this info either.

Yet another question about nominations: will an office let candidates know the results of the nomination by email? I contacted my senator's office and they said they have already mailed out results by post, but the issue is I provided my old address as I don't live in the US atm (they told me to use my old address). Or can they send results any way they choose, so maybe they would not use email, and I would have to see the results of my nomination by checking the portal?

They can choose how they notify. Email, mail, phone call, nothing at all….do you have someone you know living at your stateside address who can watch the mail for you? If it is good news it will show up in your portal. You could always send a nicely worded email explaining you are not stateside and asking if they would forward you an electronic copy of your letter.

Fellow Hoosier here. My son also received a nomination from Braun. It just showed up in his portal a couple days ago. Nice surprise. Did you get an email or a call from a staffer? Congratulations on your nomination!
Also a Hoosier! A attended the interview as well. Haven’t heard anything yet though. Do they send out emails stating we were denied a nomination?

We haven’t heard officially from Braun’s office. Just saw a nomination pop up in the portal. I believe they will send out notifications either way. (My son only saw a nomination in one of the 3 academies he applied to, so they might not be done notifying or updating portals yet, so don’t lose hope if you don’t see anything yet.)

Gotcha, thanks for the response and the hope. Also congratulations!

Which Senator is this and do you see the nom in your portal?
