I was going to follow a similar path to this, and ended up liking the Army side so much that I withdrew my application to USNA and was able to receive a LOA to USMA. As I’m sure you’ve heard many times now, everything happens for a reason.
I am currently in an ROTC program at a civilian college and recently I received my appointment to USMA. While there is no doubt in my mind that I will accept my offer, I'm curious to know if other cadets who spent a year in ROTC before going to West Point have had a more positive or negative...
I received an LOA last fall and took an overnight visit knowing I already wanted to attend. I ended up making good friends with my Plebe escort and now I already have one friend there! If nothing else, it will be a fun chance to experience West Point without the stress of being a Cadet.
There will be no negative impact, as someone who was once in your DS's shoes, if they do not get in they can always reapply but the ROTC way of life can be a great route for some people!
