AROTC Advanced Camp 2023

When I went to Advanced Camp in 1986, I went to Fort Lewis. We were housed in WWII barracks. Back then, I believe they used three posts for Advanced Camp, and where you went was based on your school. It was a week longer than it is now, but IIRC, we got one, maybe two, 36-hour type passes along the way. The grading wasn't nearly as programmatic as it is now; it was very much based on what your TAC officer thought. There were graded events (i.e. PT, rifle, land nav), but I don't believe they had any direct bearing on end of camp evaluation like they do now.

On the whole, I think it's probably a better product now than it was then, but the food/MRE thing still has me shaking my head.
I also went to LDAC/AC at JBLM. This was in 2011. Grading was definitely different but mostly TAC and peer-based. No passes. We stayed in WW2 barracks as well. They are now mostly torn down except for a couple of stragglers used by 8th BDE Cadet Command.

Fort Knox is sort of a ghost town now.

Son got his dates for AC-CST-LDAC or what ever they call it now.

Any suggestions on a decent place to stay near post? Louisville, Elizabethtown, on post, or just outside the gate?

Last year there was a family day, day before graduation. Did they release cadets on that day with instructions to show back up for gradution.

After graduation can the cadet grab gear and go?

Can they fly up there from home of record and jump in the truck with us and head home?

I'd start looking at hotels now if you want really close to post because they fill up. I think we stayed in Shepherdsville, which isn't that far as the crow flies, but you have to take the long way around to get to post. That said, the hotel there was fine and reasonably priced, at least with fedrooms.

Yes on family day and release. They got a block of maybe 6-7 hours or so where they can leave with you, but they have to be back that night around dinnertime (or maybe a little later) or so IIRC.

And, yes, they can leave directly after graduation.

I don't know about fly one way and drive another. He'd have to ask cadre about that.

Finally, maybe this is a Texas A&M thing, but there seemed to be some juggling of camp dates until not long before the regiments started. Cadets' slots were getting switched with one another as things arose, particularly related to CTLT slots. I don't know if that happens in smaller units, but it was a thing at A&M, so be mindful of that possibility.

Good luck! A year later, we're waiting on our son's BOLC date.

My DD flew there and was supposed to fly back, but we decided to drive up for family day and graduation. It was simple, just a quick change to their travel at some point towards the end. She was able to go home with us soon after graduation, which was very early in the morning.

Also, the hotels on the base are pretty nice and reasonably priced. That’s where we stayed, it was great.

Do a lot of families come for graduation?

Yes, a good amount. We didn’t plan on going initially but the more I looked into it the more I wanted to be there. That’s why the travel changes were necessary and I was glad to hear it wasn’t an issue at all.

It was a great trip. Would recommend if you’re able to make it.

Thank you! I have been thinking I'd really like to go, for us it won't be until 2025, but just thinking ahead and wanted to see what the general consensus was.

Yes, go. I found that more parents attended than I expected and my son was actually happy to see us! You can book a room right on base at the IHG. The day before graduation is a free day where you can take them off base for several hours. My son went straight to CTLT from Ft Knox but we did get permission to have him stay with us after graduation and we took him to the airport the next morning. This was 2 years ago, so I don’t know if that is still allowed.

I second staying at IHG! You can walk to the ceremony, and great breakfast, too! Not a lot to do around there and everything is pretty much closed on Sunday, FYI.

Which one? I'm not familiar with the area and see different IHGs listed. We'd like to book soon!

I think there’s a couple of IHG hotels on post. We stayed at the one by the aquatic center. It’s a bit of a distance from where cadet command is and the dorms where they stay, but I preferred that.

It was the Holiday Inn Express Wickam Inn. I can’t remember the other one but surely google does.

You can call one and they will put you wherever they have availability. When I went one hotel had rooms with 2 beds and one had rooms with one bed.
