I thought maybe it would be useful to have a catchall thread for cadets/parents regarding this summer's Advanced Camp.

My son is currently there and forwarded something about a bunch of cadets (127 to be exact) in one of the earlier regiments supposedly getting in serious trouble. I'm inclined to attribute this to a species of the "telephone game," but I thought I'd see if anyone else heard anything about this. (If the message he sent is accurate, then it is kind of alarming.)

Nothing to add here at this point, my son is not there (MSII), but he has friends that are. Of course I'm very curious now...I'll have to see if he's heard anything.

I don't know if it was 127 but an MSIV told me that quite a few have been tossed from camp (and ROTC) for cheating on the land nav course.

Yeah, that was part of it. Supposedly others were tossed for nicotine contraband.

Are you at camp?

If true, I simply don’t understand why cadets/mids do this. SMH…

And it’s not just limited to officers-in-training. In DD’s TBS class, a couple of Marine 2LTs — active duty already, with butter bars — were booted in the middle of their final exam for cheating. Again, SMH…

Because they indulge in magical thinking, “everyone is doing it,” “it’s not a big deal,” “I won’t get caught.”

I'd be shocked if nicotine is "bootable". Likely something else. We could even have nicotine at ranger school. Unfortunately that's where several started consuming

I would be, too, which is why I suspect that there may be some hyperbole and/or unreliable triple hearsay going on. OTOH, the Land Nav thing was also mentioned, including the severe penalty supposedly handed out, so maybe at least that much has some validity.

Sadly, land nav has claimed a high number of guys and gals, please don’t cheat. They have all been asked back for a rerun in 2024, good luck with CC’s report to the units concerned, red faces alround.

Are you saying they have been eliminated for failing and can try again in 2024? I assume the cheaters are booted permanently?

I believe the cheaters have been cut from this years course and returned to unit (RTU). They will be EOCC next year, with any luck. If you find Land Nav tough, people are there to help you understand the subject, do not cheat or seek help or info from a previous regiment. The number was high and CC goodwill has run out, good luck.

We had many cadets from the big military school in Texas fail land nav at Advanced Camp, so after one week they knew they could only score 3 out of 5, and would not get a good leadership position as MS IVs. It was the only thing that I did well in at Advanced Camp. Fort McCoy was our training installation, and the terrain was very similar to Fort Lewis. The Texas kids couldn't use dead reckoning in the forests of Washington state.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Green to Gold cheaters, A15. Cadets out never to return in anyway, shape, or form. The numbers were too high.

Never to return in any way, shape, or form is what I had heard also, so I was curious when you first reported that they would be allowed to recycle next year.

What does "A15" mean?

I was cadre at LDAC-JBLM when it was the location of advanced camp. I am from the area so I knew the woods can be difficult to traverse (all dead reckoning). When I was a cadet, I didn't note any cheating during the course as cadre would disguise themselves as cadets for integrity violations. People would straight up ignore anyone approaching them on the course. We were all too paranoid about getting the boot.

Surprised they cheated on the written part...that was never that difficult. Makes me question a lot of things....

Do cadets get to keep their phones now?

Isn't Land Nav about topos and compasses? As opposed to spotting a grain elevator on the prairie and walking to it.

I guess they never saw The Flight of the Phoenix, the one with Jimmy Stewart. Cross reference the Best movies ever thread.

Cheating to get a better MS IV position. That's just plain stupid. Just ask the E-8 with three tours in Syraqistan, who is one step below you in your future COC. I mean the real one.
