USNA Class of 2028 Waiting and Speculating

Welp just got the turn down. Pretty disappointing, I had two noms, 3.92uw/4.5w, 1510 sat, took math through calc BC and physics c1, mutliple college courses taken, xo of my jrotc unit, team captain of the orienteering team that just won the national championships, top 10 in the state for club swimming, member of the board for our states swimming governing body, hundreds of service hours, great AP scores, worked many jobs including coaching positions. Just very frustrating because it felt like I did everything right except living in Maryland. The competition is just so intense I think. Anyone know the exact date preliminary applications open? Just says April on the site.

Definitely seems like you have it all. I’m sure your plan B will welcome you and your talents with open arms!

That's the plan! I'm going to be doing NROTC at Carnegie Mellon, so I honestly can't complain about my plan B, even if reappplying next year doesn't work out either.
If you're planning on studying CS there (which is an amazing program btw) and then enter the 2029 class, maybe consider volunteering in admissions to help with all their computer glitches. . .good luck to you!

I know you we came in 3rd you were one hell of a runner

Also remember that medical waivers aren’t generally sought by USNA Admissions unless an appointment is on the horizon.

The first indicator that our son was going to be offered an appointment to USMMA was the change on his DoDMERB portal to “Waiver Granted” by the approving authority for USMMA.

His was a single reason DQ across all commissioning programs. AMI was submitted & the requested outside consultation was completed. Waiver was subsequently granted by USAFA, USMMA, NROTC, ROTC, & AFROTC. USAFA was ironically the first program to pursue and grant the waiver, he later withdrew his application for USAFA.

At least we know that the requisite information is already resident in his DoDMERB file should USNA & USCGA move to the next step in the process (Wait Listed @ USCGA). NSI boat space is already locked on for NROTC.
I totally bought into "waivers aren't sought by USNA Admissions unless an appointment was on the horizon". DS got a waiver request early fall, approved ASAP once docs were submitted and then we waited.... after about a month of all things in place with no appointment, I began thinking why did they move so fast on everything for us to sit and wait. Ultimately he did get the appointment and will decline. I think if they somehow it would have been processed sooner, he would not have gotten attached to USMMA and made his mind up. I also wonder if he was in a sooner round to getteh appoitnmetn but his waiver came up so he was put aside until the looked at the slate again. have come up with a million scenarios C'est La vie - we are KP Parents now!

This has been a crazy ride for sure. I wouldn't necessarily change it, we (my fam jam)have all learned from it - most importantly "do the hard things- they are worth it".

I think this is a good time to remind people, that a turndown from Annapolis is not a reflection on your stats or value. Many of you have phenomenal stats and probably wonder what you did wrong. In a word, nothing. Keep in mind this is not the Ivy League. While 1550+ scores and near perfect GPA's definitely help, it doesn't really serve the needs of the Navy and Marine Corps to have a Brigade of Midshipmen that are pretty much a carbon copy of each other. The Naval Academy is under several directives to "mix things up" and find qualified candidates that reflect the makeup of sailors and Marines that they will someday command. 1300+/- spots have to be offered up in such a manner that Annapolis is meeting the objectives that the Secretary of the Navy lays out for them.

I'm in the same boat: DQ, no waiver, and no decision yet.
Same here, DS still pending in VA. DQ and no waiver request that I’m aware.
Hate all the TDs but love all the amazing plans everyone still has to commission. They will all reach the same goal through one path or another and serve our country as great officers. Sounds like everyone’s backgrounds to this point are amazing! Keep being great leaders!

I’m 100% in favor of a TD list; this would be helpful to so many applicants, applicants and their parents. It is always better to see the real picture and know the mountain you need climb or know the mountain you climbed to get to the next opportunity (makes you more grateful and work harder to succeed at this opportunity that so many exceptional other young people didn’t have)! I will start it right here: Good luck and Go NAVY!!!

USNA Class of 2028 Turned Down List
1) LKT/DS/MOC (VA-10) and NROTC noms/college re-applicant/Turned down April 11/ STATS: 3.87 college GPA (all As in Chem Calc English and NavSci, B+ in Public Speaking), top of the NROTC unit, multiple volunteer and activities with his unit, 1510 SAT (780 E and 730 M), 33 ACT, 4.16 GPA HS, captained HS wresting team and travel wrestling team, volunteer work coaching wrestlers, and working with SAT bootcamp, 7 APs including two Calc and Physics; other things I can’t remember.
I think it is helpful in the sense that you can see how many phenomenal kids don't get in. There is just not enough room.

Gulp!!! Well folks it’s the end of a two year saga. My DS just called with the Turn Down. 😳 It has been wonderful to have this SAF family of supporters to turn to for advice. I will say, I am excited for all of the appointments and I am here if you need any advice. My DS knew there was a slim chance at getting an appointment being color blind…but he persevered anyway and applied and then reapplied again this year. He was on the waitlist last year and his waiver was denied. This year a turn down. He will continue on pursuing his Engineering degree at Pitt with the Steel City NROTC as a Marine Option and commission with the Marine Corps in three years! He loves the unit and I already know a few of you that will be joining his unit next year. I will be bummed for only a minute because I know he’s off to do great things. And that’s just the thing…these kids are already incredible and the Plans B-D are only going to open even more opportunities beyond their wildest imaginations. Good luck to you all…my DS won’t be reapplying next year, but I might check in on the reapplicants next year. I have a soft spot in my heart for those that try and try again. GO NAVY!!!!

We should get in touch! The Steel City NROTC is amazing!! 🤩
