"Graduating with Distinction"

This made me think of something that touched my heart. At DH’s last class reunion, age-related health problems have definitely impacted the class. There were grown sons and daughters there wheeling their dads around at the tollgate, to the ice breaker, to the company dinner, to the class memorial service, to other events. Some have had strokes or have cognitive issues or other serious health issues, but they wanted to be there with their classmates. Funny how a simple phrase can catch you - “our Mid is ready to be away from there.” But it astonishes me the turnouts for reunions, especially as the class gets older. I think I have some ocular moisture issues right now because we are going to a memorial service for a DH classmate tomorrow at the Chapel, a well-known 4-star and consummate aviator with a distinguished career. He was always kind to me, had no problems with women in the Navy, and DH and DBIL deployed with him in the same air wing many times across the years. Classmates are coming in from all over for “Snuffy.”
"ocular moisture issues" - love that in my soul. I'm sure our DS will miss his mates spectacularly not as long after graduation as he may think right now.

I loved the Snuffster! I got to meet him in Crystal City when we both worked at Lockheed Martin

RIP

In our day, we definitely stayed off the Yard the night before graduation. I remember that it rained much of the night before (if it rained, our graduation was in Halsey -- no Alumni Hall in those days). My mother stayed up until the rain ended.

Graduation day was sunny, low 70s -- gorgeous! Ground wasn't even wet (they had real grass on the field in those days).

The above said, we had to be at the stadium at some ungodly hour -- like 0700. We were warned/threatened that, if we didn't show up on time, we wouldn't graduate.

One other thing for the grads -- as we were forming up, the officers shepherding us said something that I'll never forget (and I paraphrase): You've been together as a class for the last 4 years. Been through a lot together. Take a good look around. You'll never all be together as a class again.

It's true. I wish I'd taken a few more minutes to look around because, less than two years later, one of my PS roommates was killed in a crazy accident (tree fell on her after a hurricane).

Interesting discussion about when and who stays where. Idk about past years, but qualified Firsties have overnights beginning with finals. If they have an 0800 final, they have to stay in Bancroft the night before. And then after their last final, they can officially check out of Bancroft.

So they get to sample freedom as soon as finals! My guy has a place and will be moving and staying there. Such an EXCITING TIME FOR THEM.

I’m just here for the spectator perspective. DS is handling all things re selling a vehicle, shipping goods, securing lease for NPGS, getting his fam tickets for graduation, living his best life the next few weeks, navigating final exams and his capstone. Personally I’m hoping I get pictures of that. Super cool and super huge project launching from near by base.

I’ve got my tickets and the house. The rest is semper Gumby for me. Still hard to believe it’s happening.

I was on the yard today and watched from afar the procession right around 12 noon. Goose bumps and seasonal allergies all at once - the Chapel Bell was ringing, Noon Meal Formation was in process, the cool wind was blowing along Stribling walk. It was a WOW moment for me!

Then I headed over to the MID Store for some retail therapy and made my 3rd tuition payment this week! 😅 At least today, everything was 20% off 🎉

A gathering of the clan for a good man.

I love Mid Store sakes, especially the daily deals before winter break.

Hey I’m just looking to find some shade 37 days from now. The seating is less important to me than the people we are with who make up the tribe of supporters who have loved and supported DS to and through this.

I’ll be on the even side with lots of water and sunscreen. And tissues. Lots of tissues.

We received the formal letter yesterday sent to all firstie parents congratulating them on the upcoming achievement of their DS or DD. It was ridiculous. I couldn’t even make it one sentence in without the lump in my throat winning. The tears of pride and acknowledgment that these kids volunteer create a humility that is very real. And that is true for me for of all who serve.
We did not receive any such letter?

Since covid - no field seating for Mid families who are in top 10%. Academy has done away with that. Why? Not sure but this is no longer a "thing".
