USAFA Mascot Injured in Prank

I thought Army was so dignified? Weren't a bunch of Army fans up in arms after their game against Air Force?

"Congratulations to Army on winning the football game. They deserved to win the game. But in my 28 years I've never seen the winning team run to the other side of the field and wave goodbye to the other side. I can guarantee you Navy would never do that."

It’s Sunday morning, so why not. Don’t know what happened, don’t really care what happened, but I don’t think a Twitter post is a reliable source of information to tell us what really happened. Than again, our President uses Twitter a lot and some folks are regrettting what they twitted in the past.

The source of the tweet is Scott Strasemeier, a Senior Associate AD at the Naval Academy Athletic Assn, who presumably observed it first-hand. I had several texts and photos from friends at the game, commenting on what they had just observed. But - I didn’t see it myself, so it is hearsay to me.

I am sure it got back to Coach Monken. I am equally sure he will address it if that is required, to remind the players they are all brothers in arms, and while it is fine to celebrate, you don’t do something to an honorably defeated opponent that tarnishes that.

No doubt it was one of those thoughtless actions of people of that age (or any age), that starts out with “hey, let’s go do...” without a moment’s thought about how it might reflect on them, their school, or their reputation. If they did it with a wrong heart, they will hear about it.

I’ll never forget USNA Supe ADM Chuck Larson, who, while we were at an away women’s basketball game in the Patriot League (I was O-rep), got up from his seat and went to talk with the other’s school’s President. Eight of their school’s students, with chests painted “NUCK FAVY,” (really) were standing in front of the Navy cheerleaders and taunting them with personal remarks about the military, their intelligence, their looks. The cheerleaders remained totally cool. I don’t know what ADM Larson said in that quiet way he had, but the students were quickly removed. There’s cheering for your team, and good-natured ribbing, but no room for mean hearts. Navy women crushed the game. Cheerleaders earned praise all around for maintaining composure.

I couldn’t actually view the link. Wonder if tweet was removed? I also hadn’t heard anything about it. What an awesome experience for my Plebe, though! I Continue to me amazed at the things he is a part of.....

I didn’t attend this year, but many of my close friends did. They confirmed it did it happen.

Was there. I can confirm two things:

1. The taunting in question did happen.

2. The Navy midshipmen responded by throwing bottles, cans, cups, and wrappers at Kell Walker (the player in question).

Both Nemo567 and Senior Associate whoever might want to check the building material of the Navy house before they start writing “class” on stones and commence with the throwing...

I'm sure the Navy response wasn't nice, but that is not the point I'm trying to make. Multiple Army supporters on this page made absurd calls for punishment for a single AF football player following an obscene gesture following the Army-AF game.

I want to see if they are going to call for the same punishment now that most of the West Point team took part in organized taunting, or if they are just hypocrites.

Kell Walker stood in front of the Navy brigade with his arms crossed and then waved goodbye after they showered him with garbage.

Is that the same as a middle finger?

The garbage was just revenge for the Corps throwing snow/ice balls at mids as they stood at attention during the march-on last year. /sarcasm.

It was one player. And he stood there in front of the Brigade. If you think that’s the same as giving the finger on national television, the absurdity lies in you.

How about we all agree that with heated rivalries, college kids of all stripes and loyalties do dumb stuff they shouldn't that reflects poorly on their institutions. I certainly remember lots of poor sportsmanship on both sides with Army games during my time as a mid.

No one covers themselves in glory on either side by throwing trash, taunting or anything else - this game or any other, because I am sure someone will recall an incident from another year, event, game, in an endless stream. Human beings are capable of a wide range of thoughtless behaviors, and regularly demonstrate it.

It wasn't one player, it was easily 50-70. Its pretty damn similar.

@UHBlackhawk and @Love4monsters.

I assume now that the shoe is on the other foot you support UCMJ'ing/suspending most of the West Point football team?

Nemo - I never supported suspending the AFA football team being suspended nor would I in this case. I understand you are feeling salty today after losing but I am choosing to not engage. We can agree to disagree.

I was in section 138, Row 33, Seat 15. Watched it in real time, with my own two eyeballs.

Well in addition to myself and the tweet by the Navy Associate AD, you have two people in this thread saying they saw it. So I don't really know what you were looking at.

You are literally the only one claiming it was “50-70 players” and “most of the team.” I already told you what happened. Were you at the game?

In his next tweet, the Navy Associate AD estimated 50-75 players. He protected his Twitter feed now so you can't see it.

I wasn't there but saw some of it on TV. My old academy roommate was there and estimated about half the team.
