The source of the tweet is Scott Strasemeier, a Senior Associate AD at the Naval Academy Athletic Assn, who presumably observed it first-hand. I had several texts and photos from friends at the game, commenting on what they had just observed. But - I didn’t see it myself, so it is hearsay to me.
I am sure it got back to Coach Monken. I am equally sure he will address it if that is required, to remind the players they are all brothers in arms, and while it is fine to celebrate, you don’t do something to an honorably defeated opponent that tarnishes that.
No doubt it was one of those thoughtless actions of people of that age (or any age), that starts out with “hey, let’s go do...” without a moment’s thought about how it might reflect on them, their school, or their reputation. If they did it with a wrong heart, they will hear about it.
I’ll never forget USNA Supe ADM Chuck Larson, who, while we were at an away women’s basketball game in the Patriot League (I was O-rep), got up from his seat and went to talk with the other’s school’s President. Eight of their school’s students, with chests painted “NUCK FAVY,” (really) were standing in front of the Navy cheerleaders and taunting them with personal remarks about the military, their intelligence, their looks. The cheerleaders remained totally cool. I don’t know what ADM Larson said in that quiet way he had, but the students were quickly removed. There’s cheering for your team, and good-natured ribbing, but no room for mean hearts. Navy women crushed the game. Cheerleaders earned praise all around for maintaining composure.
