Am I in the wrong for this?

As some people may know, I was not selected on the last AROTC board, and am crossing my fingers for this board, though things aren’t looking good, as my schools of intent haven’t locked, and I noticed last board that people who won usually had their schools locked earlier on. Anyways, I recently decided to remove one of my top choices from my list due to some actions by that schools ROO. Said ROO had been heavily recruiting me, and I had been in consistent contact with him, as well as being almost sure I was going to go to his school even if I didn’t get a scholarship. Well, a few days before the previous board results came out, he told me the results were about to come out and he “had inside sources saying that I’d be a 4 year winner in a few days”. Well, turns out I wasn’t a winner of anything whatsoever. Obviously I was pretty crushed at the time and to an extent still am because I really trusted this guy. I confronted him about it over phone and he said he “Wanted to motivate me.” What in the world does that even mean in that context? Due to his actions, I felt he may be indicative of a dodgy program, and honesty I’m in no real place to forgive him for that, so I decided to remove his school from my list. I was wondering what others thoughts are on this. Am I in the wrong? Did I over react? Thank you.

If you don't feel comfortable going there then you absolutely did the right thing. Personally, I think lying to me to keep me motivated is a pretty poor leadership characteristic. Hope you hear good news from the last board.

If you do not have confidence in the program then I think you absolutely did the right thing. Have you been working your plan B with other schools and ROOs if you don’t get a national scholarship? I think that is key, to be in contact with your top schools and keep them informed of your interest and any other pertinent info. I know my DD has been in contact with her top school’s ROO on a monthly basis and her other schools off and on throughout this entire and it has really helped her in narrowing down programs and schools. Good luck !

Doesnt make sense. When it didnt happen, it would be pretty negative

I have kept in contact. Probably not as much as I should, but I don’t really know what I’d say to the ROO’s that I haven’t said a few times already.

My DS has been fortunate not to have any promises made. His chances are not good of getting a scholarship due to his SAT scores. However I have heard that from some parents that ROOS tell students what they qualify for at the Interview. I was shocked because I know of one DS who most likely will not get one due to their GPA and SATs. However I have heard that students who most likely will be accepted at one of the academies are made promises by ROOS, but that make sense because when you have an extremely competitive package you are more than likely to get a 4 year ROTC scholarship.
I have have met several ROOs some are really nice, I met an extremely rude one, and some who don’t have the time to really meet. My DS will mostly go to the school where the ROO was really nice and helpful and made no promises.
His chances of getting a campus based scholarship are very good, especially when the ROO knows him.

One thing to remember is that staff rotates too. So keep in my mind how long an officer has been there and when they will move. One that is extremely liked during the process may be set to move this summer. So if it’s a school you really like, financial packages, etc. keep in mind you may have 2-3 officers by the time it’s all said and done in 4 years. Trust your gut though. None of us were there for any of this, but it sounds not above board in my mind. It’s a good reminder to not trust any ‘promises’ until you see them come from an official source... portal, contract, etc. Good luck.

You're good man. It's your life! Do what is best for you!

That's a pretty self-serving approach.

Nobody is a better advocate for you than yourself.

Not sure that comment is self-serving at all. People choose the service branch they feel fits them the best. They choose the school that they feel they will excel the best, select a branch that suits them the best. Heck people choose their spouse based on whats best for themselves. Making these types of choices based on what works best for yourself does not make a person self-serving, how you live your life once you get there determines the type of person you are.

This is so true. DS is a Midn 3/c. At this point there is only one officer left at the unit who was there when he started last year. And that officer is leaving at the end of this school year, so in two years there will have been a complete staff turnover. I don't think this drastic of a turnover is typical, but you never know. Fortunately, he has been impressed with the new staff as well.
