    Polio Shot after 18?

They gave mine the shot before turning 18. I don't want to give medical advice, of course, but I really wish she would have just gotten it here at home before leaving. So much other stuff to deal with during Swab Summer. We deliberately didn't get it because it clearly said "18+"

    Polio Shot after 18?

Yes. They will get the shot at the academy during the summer, even if they are under 18. At least mine did.

    Nervous in Newton

Just a little word of encouragement.... my cadet got a phone call on March 31, 11:15pm Eastern time (we are on the west coast, so 8:15pm our time) with a full offer. Currently thriving at the academy. So obviously no guarantees, but just know they DO give out acceptances at the very.last.minute.

    Wisdom teeth removal

!!?!?! Glad you hear your cadet has had a good experience. I shutter at the stories I've heard (2022-2023). I can't disagree with you more about not having them removed before getting to the academy. I would do anything and everything I could do make sure my cadet had them out before...

    Wisdom teeth removal

According to my cadet... yes. Everybody she knows who still had them, had their wisdom teeth pulled during 3/C year. Whether there was a problem or not. No idea was "policy" is, just going by what the cadets have said.

Best time to visit if you can’t do both: R-day or Parents Weekend in Fall?

I haven't read all of the responses, but I see where it's mentioned you can go to classes with your cadet on Parents Weekend. I certainly wouldn't count on that. We weren't allowed to, even after traveling from the west coast. We had to sit outside of the classes and waited in the rain for our...

    What happens next?

This is the Coast Guard Academy page. I assure they, they take out all wisdom teeth there and I've been hearing some bad stories from my cadet. As recent as this past week. I can't disagree more with what you're saying, based on what I've been seeing at the CGA. But perhaps medical care is...

    What happens next?

Also, if your son/daughter hasn't gotten their wisdom teeth taken out yet, I highly recommend doing it now. If they don't, they will have them removed there. (not during Swab Summer, but after). Some cadets didn't have much of a problem with it, but some had a much rougher time. Either way...

Notes from C/O 27 parent on packing list & SS packages

Just sharing our experience from 2022. My cadet could never get a hold of the dramamine on board. She was too busy and could never get any. As a result, she spent the entire time throwing up. Once she got some, she was so sick, she couldn't stay ahead of the sea sickness and kept throwing up...

    R-Day question

They did not limit parents inside for the class of 2026 swearing in. Looking back at the pictures now, the seating was pretty tight, but I believe everybody there had a seat in the bleachers.

    R-Day question

Read the schedule posted above from a previous year. If you think those activities interest your family, then check 'em out. Personally, my cadet didn't want to do those and we didn't push it. We flew in Friday night and then arrived on the campus Saturday morning. But spent leisurely time on...

Coast Guard Academy supports transitioning (male to female) cadet

Perhaps it isn't a full surgical procedure. I'm really not sure. The email we received referred to the individual as "transitioning" but I guess I'm not fully aware what it means. My cadet is home on break and filled us in on the rest- that he/she is allowed in the women's showers and is now...

Coast Guard Academy supports transitioning (male to female) cadet

It's come to my attention that the Coast Guard Academy is supporting a current cadet who is transitioning from a male to a female. The cadet is now welcome in the women's showers/restrooms/living spaces and will be treated as if they were born a female. I was wondering if the other service...

    Advice for Anxious Applicants

In California, we don't hear back from most colleges until March. My cadet heard from the CGA the last week of March. Thankfully an acceptance, but yes, the wait is very tough. I would just try to distract yourself, as it could very well be another three months before you get a decision. good...

    BMT vs. Service Academy training

Does anybody have insight as to how BMT (specifically, Air Force) compares to the summer training prior to the service academies? Wondering which is more difficult and how the two compare. (I have one child in a SA and one thinking about enlisting in the Airforce and they are comparing the two...

    SWAB addresses?

As usual, ProudMom7 has great advice. Your swab should get their mail, but best to follow instructions as best as you can. I would recommend a follow up with those people to address as "Swab John Doe". I know for my daughter's year, some parents addressed letters to "Cadet John Doe" and I...

    Administrative Processing?

Very interesting! I never knew they factored that in, but that makes sense.

    Administrative Processing?

No, definitely not the case for everybody. My daughter got her first choice for a roommate for first semester, and didn't get somebody from her list for second. I think they try to match people from their "wish list", but it's hit or miss if you get the person and location you ask for.

    Questions on required items list

Either this is new, or the person checking us out did it incorrectly. We stuffed the box full of items purchased from the Parents Assoc, and were charged $10 for one small item from home. Not a big deal, I just didn’t know that was their policy and I’m letting other parents know. I also wanted...
