Hello,

I am having a bit of a dilemma, I have received my LOA from USMMA, and plan to accept, but I am attending a 4 year, and in one of my calculus classes I feel that if I do not drop there is a big chance I could fail the class under the circumstances. In the event that I need to drop the class, and end with a “W”, would I lose my slot at the Academy? Any information is greatly appreciated.

A failing grade could definitely put your appointment at risk. A "W" is questionable, but not good. Is there anything you can do to get your grade up? You will probably be in a similar position at Kings Point as almost everyone has difficulties in at least one class while there. Have you talked to your teacher? Is there any kind of tutoring center at your school? Have you tried online resources like Kahn Academy? Don't give up until you have tried all these alternatives. Good luck.

My son came across a similar situation. I would ensure to email your admissions officer with an explanation. My son sent an email to his admissions officer and coach when he first started having issues with the class. and then ultimately when he decided to withdraw. The virtual learning and different technique the teacher was providing was not helpful. He had already taken calc at NMMI and passed with flying colors. He was taking it again in preps for USMMA at our community college(long story)
He was advised to W vs the failing grade and make sure there was an explanation to be included in your packet.

Can't say I was in your exact situation but I remember having to withdraw from calc 1 first time I took it in college before coming here. Crushing, but I was able to retake in summer school, essentially replacing my nasty "W." Went on to get an A in calc 2 as well, and this might have strengthened my app.

Just my 2 cents but since you're on a shorter timeline to fix things with an LOA (congrats btw), try to get that C instead of a W. It ain't pretty, but it gets the job done and I doubt admissions will question it too hardly. YMMV.

Take the W. The chances you lose your spot over this are very small. I wouldn't lose any sleep over this.
