1 Week until FT

Not sure about other parents, but we got our first letter from our son today. He is at Max 1 or whatever its called. In the letter he said he mailed it out on day 2, which I think is either Wednesday or Thursday of last week, but I'm not sure, and it arrived today, the following Friday. He said the mail system was a complete cluster. So other parents should be aware and not get worried.

He said they were told no more phones or texts when they got on the bus at the airport.

He mentioned it was incredibly hectic, and there was lots and lots of yelling. He said he was selected Flight Commander on Day 1 and fired on Day 2, but he said not to worry, that all but one of the Flight Commanders were fired. He seemed to be having fun, so that's what matters.

Good luck everyone.

Isn't it interesting what they consider fun?

Before you know it he will be calling you to say I am done!

Heard from DS this morning, picking him up at the airport this evening. The month went by fast. He said he really enjoyed it, but he was glad he didn't have to do it again next year. He did comment that he finally got used to the heat just in time to come back to Maine where it is averaging 20 degrees cooler. He will probably be wearing his jacket for the next month.

I have to ask now...did he only enter AFROTC TY as a sophomore?

I am just curious because freshmen, like kevster heard for 2 yrs about SFT. They knew when they left cell phones would be confiscates and the only communication would be USPS mail.

He was AFJROTC in High school, credit for 6 yrs because of summer training. Then did go in as Freshman AFROTC. We knew about the SFT but he made no mention of letter writing. I asked as many questions as I could, but he was always sooo busy. He was doing 3 jobs for the detachment in addition to a slight overload in course work. Some things probably just didn't think to tell us. Whenever we saw him, it was gotta study, gotta pick this up for Field Training. Oh well. He works hard, he was awarded GMC of the year at his detachment along with some other awards.

The parents are always the last to know.

I totally knew about the cell phone thing. I read it in the manual. Ha! But I didn't read all of it! Wonder if it was in there? Oh well, I'll makes it up to him when he comes back.

Hardest thing as a parent is cutting ties and letting them soar on their own.

It appears that is what your DS wants. Relish that fact.

I get you want to feel closer to him regarding his future, but as a Mom that now has a college grad, a DD 2014 (college) and a 2016 child, my perspective has changed over the yrs.

It is DS's life, and I must remember he is 22 yrs old, he is no longer the child. I must respect that he will not include me in every aspect of his life. My investigating, will soothe my nerves, but if I use this information for a dialogue, I need to be prepared to feel his wrath.

Trust me, he has shown his wrath. We get it...his life, his journey. Our job is to shut up and color!

FWIW, I chuckled at the manual phone thing. Bullet and I never saw manuals, orders, etc. We got a phone call where he said I need to get shots, buy X.Y.Z. and drop me off at the airport on this date. I only assumed the phones would be confiscated.

Lol!!! PIMA, you're kinda funny. I really don't have an issue with cutting ties. Like I said somewhere, I'm just here to support him, part of that is understanding what HE is going through. Since he is away at college, I have only seen him minimally, because of convenience or lack there of, and even when the rest of the school is on break, he takes on extra duties for the detachment and gets waivers to stay in dorms. Which is fine with me. I want him to be self sufficient, it's the way I brought him up. He only needs me to get around and take care of X Y Z, set up appts, etc and the occasional Epic Meal. He always shares whats going on if he has time, I listened to him recite half the Air manual in one day running around shopping for FT. Thanks for listening and advice.
