We are still the greatest country in the world, because of people like these 13, despite our problems.

On an earlier post, before I knew of the identities of the service members killed , I wrote “servicemen”. Now I know they were not all men that perished. Of the Marines killed, two were women – SGT Nicole Gee and SGT Johanny Rosario. For me it is a jolting reminder that for those that serve, death does not discriminate based on gender, race, or creed. This poem is in memory of all of them.

To Those I Love
by Isla Paschal Richardson
If I should ever leave you whom I love
To go along the Silent Way,
Grieve not,
Nor speak of me with tears,
But laugh and talk Of me as if I were beside you there.
(I‘d come-I‘d come, could I but find a way!
But would not tears and grief be barriers?)
And when you hear a song or
See a bird I loved,
Please do not let the thought of me be sad...
For I am loving you just as I always have...
You were so good to me!
There are so many things I wanted still
To do—so many things to say to you...
Remember that I did not fear—
It was just leaving you that was so hard to face...
We cannot see Beyond...
But this I know:
I loved you so –
Twas heaven here with you!
Sandy Hook is a few miles from my house and when the first reports came over the radio of a school shooting my wife was teaching first grade at a near by grammar school. Think about how that feels.
God they are so young,
When one leaves unprotected individuals in a hornets nest and leaves the hornets in charge with billions of tech and ammo and war fighting equipment, one cannot be surprised when this untrustworthy group acts in their own self interests. These deaths were completely senseless and avoidable. We were retreating, packing up to leave. Why hit us? Why kick the hornets nest?
Many of us have been to far too many of these. We grieve this as a family of those who are wearing a uniform now or who have worn it. I take comfort in seeing things properly done, the rituals observed.I can't.
