Mr. President and First Lady, the National Arboretum pair, are once again raising a family. Eggs DC4 and DC5 were laid a few days apart, and the port-and-starboard watchstanding has begun.

DC4 hatched at 0721 local time today, 3/29. A little puffball somewhere underneath the duty brooder. I just caught a glimpse.

DC5 expected to follow in a few days.

Then it's the fun of watching live fish delivered.

They look so proud & majestic...but not in a good mood; I wouldn't want to mess with them!

Right now, Friday 3/31 midday, there is an entire mallard duck in the nest. And a fish. Don't look if you're squeamish. Apex predators at work.

Both chicks are little gray puffballs.
