Hi everyone!

My DD is an incoming freshman at RIT and will be joining the NROTC-MO unit out of UR. Anyone else here doing the same? It would be nice to connect with some other parents as we figure out what in the heck we're doing. LOL

She just get her NSI assignment and needs to request a change to the 3rd cycle. She's assigned to the first one (to begin on May 21). She's still in school. The 2nd cycle starts June 18, and her graduation is the night before. Hopefully there will be room in the last session. Only gives a couple of days before she has to move in on campus, but I know she doesn't want to miss her graduation (and her last rowing event - States is that weekend).

Lots of words to say "hello" and who might be headed to Great Lakes, IL this summer??

How did she get her NSI assignment? And although you said this - aren't there still so many kids who are still in school on May 21?

She just got an email.
I think most are still in school but honestly if she would be allowed to finish in the coming weeks and go then, I’d be all for it. She’ll fly back the day of her graduation but then we would have until mid-Aug with her.

I think there are some schools that end as early as Memorial Day but I have no idea about graduation.

It looks like the scheduling is weird because of quarantine. Each cycle is 4 weeks now. They will have a 2 week ROM. The 2nd week will involve classroom type learning and then they will be out for weeks 3 and 4.

Thanks - I just went and looked also. I was wondering how they would deal with COVID. My DS has 3 AP exams the week of May 24 and then graduation on the 27th - so he will definitely need to switch if he gets assigned to that group. It would be nice to have the whole summer off before going to school though!

He graduates on May 27? That’s great! My kid’s isn’t until June 17!! It’s ridiculous.

I just committed to RIT today and will also be joining NROTC out of UR pending a medical waiver. I haven't received my NSI assignment yet but also don't graduate until June 11th and also have AP testing that week. I have reached out to the UR unit to discuss how NSI works when waiting on a waiver and awaiting word back and also let them know that I would not be able to attend first session.

2 years ago my DS had to make a similar change request and was in the last NSI session. it was a tight turnaround to get him to school 48 hours after he got home but it made for a nice summer break before great lakes

I just got assigned to the 1st iteration as well and got in contact with my unit (U of San Diego) to switch for the same reason. Glad NSI is happening though!

Congratulations! Good luck with the waiver!

Thank you. Has your daughter had much communication from the UofR unit yet? Not sure what to expect but other than a few questions I have sent their way, I haven't received any additional information.

DS got assigned to NSI1 as well. (Through email). He is eager to seek an early graduation agreement with his HS and then participate in the first session. He should know next week if possible. And just so you know @kimchee432 we don’t know anything about what he (or we) are getting into;) Advice welcomed...

She did initially since she needed to transfer the scholarship to RIT. The XO was very helpful and communicative with that. I don't know how much she's been in touch with the unit since she hasn't really needed to. She left a message for someone on Friday but it was late.

I wish that DD would be able to attend the 1st session but her school schedule is so bad... I hope he's able to graduate early and go. And FWIW, I have no idea about anything either. HAHA!

Do the NSI assignment notification emails come directly from the school NROTC unit?

Yes, it seems a lot of schools in the south start in early August and end beginning to early May.

My daughter is doing NSI in the second session. We are from Elmhurst IL 😊 She is going to Vanderbilt in the fall. Trying to figure out paperwork in the weeks ahead. We also have to look at the packing list! I know she is planning on bringing a Kindle for reading.

Don't even bother with the kindle. She won't be allowed to keep it/use it, and wouldn't have time to read anyways.

My son is also attending Vanderbilt in the fall, but hasn't heard about his NSI cycle yet - did your daughter receive her assignment from Vanderbilt NROTC? And I'm with you - definitely sending a Kindle with the 2-week ROM and since the website specifically says they will be permitted.

Well if they permit it but there will be no time to read, and when there is time they will be busy reading and memorizing gouge and history provided by the Navy.
