26ers just finished our 1st semester at USAFA. If you have any questions, I know there are a couple of us on here willing to help you out. Congrats to those who received appointments so far!

Following up on the I-day post - how long did it take you to acclimate to the altitude?
Anything you wish you did differently to prepare for the academy - physical, academic, mental?

Honestly it took me a while to fully feel adjusted. However, they weren’t allowed to PT us the first part of basic, which helped a lot (although I did feel out of shape after that). Honestly I wish I had prepared better mentally. Basic was more of a mental challenge than a physical one…I did not realize this originally. Also, the entirety of freshman year is just one big mental challenge. Doing anything to mentally prepare would be helpful.

Like what?

There’s a lot of mental games the cadre play, especially the first half since they can’t PT. I’m honestly not sure how to prepare, but physical training will help. There’s not much to prepare for mentally, you just kinda have to jump in

I did not notice the altitude much. It was honestly at the back of my mind. Everyone is affected by it so they adjust the workouts and pt sessions for that.

Get comfortable in front leaning rest!

Mental games(I found)-
Not knowing the time (class dependent)
Lack of contact with family
Being tired after lunch
Seeing your cadre concerned or upset (trust me, they may not be but it messes with you)
Not knowing what you did wrong and having to fix it anyway

I won't give it alllll away but those are the aspect you see in most pictures.

OK, this insight is very helpful. It's probably something you can't fully explain to someone who hasn't been through it. Sounds like it's difficult because of the complete lifestyle change, going from high school to college, being physically exhausted, not having a lot of downtime, just being in a new environment cut off from the familiar. I appreciate your candor, and maybe the best advice is just to know that it will be difficult this first year, and to understand the realities of the demands of a service academy. The change from high school to college is a big adjustment itself, then you add the physical fitness and scheduling demands of a service academy on top of that.

Lol! My DD said she had one cadre that kept yelling (sorry I mean vocalizing with a purpose) at her re her marching “if you don’t stop doing that” but wouldn’t ever tell her what “that” was. She still doesn’t know if it was bad leadership of a mind game.

Thankfully I will say because of my team and all of us going through it, you feel less alone. It truly makes a difference knowing 27 others feel the same an honestly got your six, speaking of which. We had an exercise today where we need to put of jackets away. I was in a different room than mine so one of my old basic roommates took it to put it away. I didn't see where as I was taking care of the second task. Well I was in the wrong spot, we get called out and with out a second thought she takes immediate responsibility. Now I truly couldn't see her doing that at the start, she would've made an excuse. I trust her with my six Your wingman have your six, always watch theirs

Do you remember the handgun and rifle qualification course requirements or where I can find them? Thank you!
