Hey Forum,

Quick question concerning nominations for the Academy. About a month or two ago I had interviews with both of the Senators from my state, and unfortunately was not selected as their top choice for a nomination. I then received letters from both stating that I did not receive their initial nomination and that I was put on a waiting-list.

I wasn't too worried because I already had a Presidential Nomination if all else failed. Yesterday I decided to login to my USNA account just to see if anything was updated (after about a month's absence) and under "Nominations" I had two nominations. One was the Presidential and the other was from Congress/Senator 2, which was added on Dec. 1. My page used to only show the Pres. nom. I am just confused because I did not receive a letter stating that I obtained another nomination.

Anyway, my question to the forum is if anyone knows what this means? I now that none of you can verify that I have two nominations but what are your thoughts on this?

Thanks-Gatchman54

This probably won't help you at all, but something similar happened to me. I logged onto my candidate page and there was a nomination from my Representative. Still no word from my Representative's nomination coordinator. I plan on calling them later this week when I don't have to work from 8-5.

Okay

Well it's good to hear that I'm not the only one...I just thought it was weird because it has been there since December first and I still haven't heard anything from their office. Oh well I'm not gonna complain!

Good luck with the work situation and let me know what happens when you call...

This is a new notion for me. I'm not aware of/familiar w/ the idea of "waiting list" for a nomination. Can informed folk explain how this works? Its use? Pervasiveness?

"Waiting List"

Whistle Pig,

Perhaps I used the wrong term for what I was trying to say. After going through the interviewing process with my senator, I received a letter that stated:

"...you will be placed on my alternate list and should any nominations become available through cancellation, medical disqualification, or any other reason, you will be reconsidered..."

I didn't have my letter in hand at the time I posted the original question, and could not think of the exact wording he used. I suppose that "waiting list" and "alternate list" can be interpreted differently. I still don't really know whats going on though. Maybe I was reconsidered!

Update

I contacted my Blue and Gold officer about the situation and he contacted my Senator's office. Turns out that one of the interviewees that made his top 10 list had already received an Appointment before he had his interview, so being the next name on the alternate list, I received a competitive nomination.

Just thought I would let d.mcknight know since he/she was having the same issue. Good luck to all!

There was a thread on this topic about a month ago which revealed the use of the alternate or waitlist option by some MOC's. Frankly, it appears to me to be a smart approach as it provides a means to re-assign nominations that have been assigned to candidates who will not be using them. It works to the overall advantage of the candidates at large. At this time I have at least two nominees who are out of the running and know that the MOC has other qualified candidates who could use the nominations.

I Approve

Well I definitely approve of the system, it got me a second nomination that I wouldn't have had otherwise! I am very grateful to have received two nominations, twice the amount most candidates get. One of my friends at school was applying to Westpoint and unfortunately didn't receive a nomination from any source.

It feels great to have made it to this point in the application process. I have a feeling that the next two months will be extremely long, especially when the majority of the Appointment letters start to go out in the next week...I have been holding my breath coming through the door from track practice everyday hoping that an Appointment letter will be waiting on the kitchen table since September!

.................when the majority of the Appointment letters start to go out in the next week...............
LOL. The "majority" may "start" but the total will not reach a majority for quite a while. February is traditionally Admissions ensuring that they have the right candidate in the right slot. A huge matrix. I would say that they really start coming out around mid March. And don't be overly concerned until mid-April.
