4/c at CGA. Ask any questions!

The cotton tshirts are for under your dress uniforms so you dont really exercise in them. Just get a pack of Hanes and you will be fine. People use white tshirts for a lot of things such as shining shoes, dusting, and ironing so don't be afraid to bring ten.
Thanks! And Happy New Year!

About Swab Summer supplies:

I saw a list which included 10 vneck cotton tshirts. Why cotton? It seems that performance fabric tshirts would work better, given their wide availability. Thanks for your insights and time.
I don't recommend it for Swab Summer, but afterwards I did buy an Under Armour white V-neck shirt. Well worth the money, and makes Trops much more comfortable to wear on those hot days in class or giving tours on Eagle.

Excellent! I have found several brands that make plain performance fabric tshirts for such occassions. Try 32 degrees.

Again, I cannot emphasize this enough: WAIT until you receive additional info, suggestions and tips from USCGA, the CO 2026 Parents FB page, the USCGA Parents Association FB page, the USCGA Alumni Association, etc.

Fretting, guessing and buying things now is not really a great use of your time.

I do get your point, truly. I am a planner to the nth degree. I appreciate your input.

Hard not to plan, but I agree with @FiveByFive - best just to wait. Who knows - lists could change from previous years. The only thing that should be done right away is to take steps to get your future swab a passport if they do not already have one. But since you've previously mentioned international travel, I doubt that's needed for your daughter.

What’s your major? What do you know about the cyber systems major?
I’m a cyber systems major! You don’t take major-specific classes until 3c year, so I’m not much help about that. But something to keep in mind is that you can change majors your 4c year.

Also, refresh yourself don’t math before Swab Summer if you care about summer school. I was placed in Foundations of Calculus, so now I have to take Calculus II over 3c summer. Government and Management majors only have to take Calculus I, or at least wouldn’t have had to take summer school, had they been placed in rock math.

What’s your major? What do you know about the cyber systems major?
I am also a cyber systems major, I am a 4/c so I haven't done much in the major but the major has several different pathways. I don't know the specifics but there is one geared towards government and policy and sort of the white hat hacking side of things, but there are others with one being focused more on what ORCA, the math major, does. From what I have gathered from upperclassmen, cyber isn't the major for heavy coding, but it doesn't sound like the hardest major. It is in high demand in the Coast Guard, and there even is a class you can take that will give you a top secret clearance so that is cool! And if you really like cyber stuff you can always join the cyber team here. They are really cool and a great way to get your sports credit and have fun with cyber stuff.
But the major is still growing and with how much demand there is for cyber major graduates I can see there being some cool things being worked into the major. Also, with the new provost they are working on changing how the academic side of the academy works so things are subject to change. She even mentioned working on offering minors but who knows when that would happen.

Hey guys, I'm a 4/c here at the academy. I can attempt to answer any questions you have about the schoolyear or cadet life.
I have a 4.2 GPA, do xc and track, math team, 100 service hours, student ambassador, and NHS. Also have 4 AP credits and 5 honors credits. Only problem is that most of these credits are English and history. I have taken all required math and science courses, but only one was honors. Do I still have a chance if I’m a good applicant but am better at English and history? On my SAT, I got 98th percentile for reading and 75th percentile for sciences, so I am still above average but not as great as I am at history and English. I know they value STEM very much

CGA really looks at applications from a holistic standpoint, and everyone brings something unique. They do value STEM, but not everyone is a STEM major. You will still have to take math and science classes, because everyone graduates with a bachelor of sciences degree, even if your major is government. Have you already applied? If not, you will need a math teacher recommendation, so get to know that teacher who will write it. Know why you want to go to CGA. What kind of career are you looking for in the Coast Guard? Did you apply for AIM? Remember that academics is only one piece of the admissions puzzle. There is so much information on the CGA website about the different majors, and even cadet blogs that will give you insight into what it's like to be at the Academy. Put your best self forward, and that is all you can control. Good luck to you!

I am only a sophomore. I want to be a marine engineer and serve in the coast guard. As a 13 year old I was not confident and didn’t sign up for honors level courses in math and science and I am now stuck trying to move up. I will apply to AIM, I already am working on my PFE, and have a good level of adversity that I’ve had to overcome by living with an ICD. Unfortunately thst also means I need a medical waiver

If you have a medical condition that requires a waiver then you should look to Larry Mullen on the DodMERB thread on this forum. He can either point you in the right direction or answer any questions you may have. His contact info is on the thread. He is extremely knowledgeable and helpful with the process. Good Luck!

So, do you play ball at CGA. I’m a 2025 high school grad and have contacted the coach about ball.

That's now how security clearances work.
It was poorly phrased, but not entirely untrue. There is a class offered at the Academy that is held in a secure room and examines Top Secret materials, so they do clear students enrolled in the class to TS before class begins.

So they all have their SF86 background checks completed and have interim TS? I don't see a bunch of cadets somehow circumventing the entire vetting/background process, especially for a TS, just to take some class at a service academy.

I don't know the ins and outs of how it works - it's pretty exclusively only for Gov majors, which I wasn't, but my roommate was. We all already had secret and I know he had to go through more security type stuff before he was allowed to start the class. That said, because a lot of the process is already completed, maybe it's easier to finish up quickly and get the interim TS? Not too sure, just know it exists.
