Hi everyone! My son received his notification yesterday that he is bend awarded a 4 year NROTC scholarship. He will most likely attend VMI.

He's my first to launch so I have no idea about anything. And he won't let me help with anything of course.

But needless to say, we are THRILLED!

He also applied for the Army ROTC scholarship and we haven't heard anything back yet from them.

Does anyone know if an applicant hears anything if they've been deferred to the second round of Boards for Army?

My partner is actually the former Army ROTC commander for VMI, from ten years ago, and he helped my son practice his interview, etc.

We're so excited!

It is my understanding that the Board meets again next week to review NROTC scholarship applications. My son's application is complete and pending review. He sent his 6 weeks grades to his recruiter asking that they be added to his application/file but did not get a response. Does anyone know if 6 week or mid-year (first semester) grades can be added to the application for additional consideration? Colleges have portals to upload this information but this isn't an option with the NROTC scholarship application.

As far as the NROTC scholarship, I believe that once it is "ready to be boarded" stage it can't be changed. There also isn't really a slot for grades in the application anyway. That is why it is important to put forth your best application rather than the fastest.

His application is definitely solid, high GPA, multiple leadership positions, community service, 3 sport varsity athlete (2 year CAPT), lots of AP and honors courses with stem focus, good SATs. He wasn't picked on the first board so was trying to bolster in any way possible. The waiting game is hard!

The first Board was a little unique in that they apparently didn't actually review all of the board ready applicants.

Something about their new system and they needed to test it out or something. Don't quote me, lol!

The waiting game sucks.

My son WAS picked up by the first NROTC board but he has yet to hear from his first choice school and Army deferred him from their first Boards (and they're supposed to be less competitive than Navy).

So now we wait until January to see if Army offers him a scholarship. And hopefully he'll hear soon from his first choice school.

Good luck to your son! Hang in there! With his stats, it's probable that he'll get picked up this month!

He looks competitive. Best thing to do is just to wait. I know it sucks, and all I can say is that the waiting does not get better farther down the road. It is so hard, but the best thing you can do is just focus on other things. Also be ready for the possibility of being put on the waitlist and not knowing until April or May. It happens even this early.

The Navy never plans on looking at every application they have before a certain board. They will look as a specific amount each board and that is it. Has nothing to do with the new system. That is why they have 10 board dates.

That makes sense! I honestly appreciate that they have a Board every month. It kind of sucks that Army does the one in October and then makes you wait until January for the second round. Especially since the first Board is mostly the Ivy candidates, many of whom are likely seeking a SA appointment anyways.

Even the local recruiter didn't know they were capping the number they looked at during the first board. We were told that we would definitely be looked at on second board, but I guess that could change. So if 200 were qualified before the first board and they only looked at 60, does that mean that they might not even look at the additional 140 at this next board? Like I said, we were told they would. Not sure how many apply during a season, but at some point they will have to catch up to get through them all. Thanks for any information.

I'm not sure how many they actually looked at the first Board but I CAN tell you that they CCd the other award recipients when they emailed my son and there were about 30 applicants included.

Good thing it was only 30 this time :)

All notifications have been sent out. I was told that even though there were around 200 applications ready, only 60 were reviewed this round. That was done in order to validate the new software system being used this year. So I would not read too much into anyone not hearing from the first board. Last year, many of those high up on the alternate list were not informed until February or March.

Those 140 will definitely be reviewed at the next board and a good portion of any additional packages. The new software system will streamline things so they will make up some time. For tier 3 majors, they do follow the 15% limit for each board.

NROTC portal updated today. Thrilled for my DS! Who else got good news?
