Academy Flag

I thought 4th company was the best...LOL:wink: Ok so I am prejudiced as the dad of a 4th company PC

By now I'm a little frustrated with this chit chat... I would settle for even a high resolution .JPG of the USMMA Flag (The Academy Flag) and the "Flag of the US Merchant Marine Cadet Corps". No one has yet even put an image anywhere out there on the web, much less remanufactured the flags for distribution to the faithful!
Its kind of lame that these key elements of "honor guard"-type activities cannot be found and properly reproduced so they can at least be included in Powerpoints, etc., not to mention manufactured as REAL FLAGS! (Has anyone heard of The Annin Flag Company in Verona, NJ?)
If the support operations at the school itself, and its illustrious "companys store" can't get it's act together to have these flags produced, then the parents should get on top of it a little better than they have to date.
Here are the statutory Descriptions:
"USMMA FLAG: Emblem of the Academy, on a dark blue field; above the emblem in the form of an arc: UNITED STATES MERCHANT MARINE with ACADEMY centered immediately below, and KINGS POINT, NY, centered beneath the emblem,
with all wording in gold letters."
"FLAG of United States Merchant Marine Cadet Corps.: Emblem of the Academy centered on a dark blue field; above the emblem in the form of an arc:
UNITED STATES MERCHANT MARINE with CADET CORPS centered immediately below,
with all wording in gold letters."
I regret my first post in this forum is to point out a "blind spot", but there MUST be a renewed effort to raise the profile of the USMMA ever-higher. Let's get the "blocking and tackling" down here. Let's get the Flags and the emblems, and the Guidons, and the devices of the USMMA and MARAD in order here, as they symbolize the uniquness and the heritage of this institution. (Ok, Off soap box now.)

I completed a beautiful counted cross stitch (kit was purchased at ship's store) and am now doing a needlepoint (again purchased at ship's store) that convey the US Merchant Marine Academy flag (as pictured in above post). My son's room has become somewhat of a shrine. I had a US flag flown over the US Capital in honor of his Indoctrination which hangs on his wall, the cross stitch is framed as well as Plebe class picture, certificates of nomination and acceptance....you get the idea! It's what I did that first year and continued during his first sea time (last Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, etc) during his second year. What will I do when he is gone 6 months this year? Finish the needlepoint!

Thanks!! My Powerpoint needed the Academy Flag. ( I had the Battle Standard.) Have you been able to find an image of the "Flag of the Cadet Corps". I have not.
To all of those whom I have offended already in my brief tenure in the forum (or will quite possibly offend in the future).... I am genuinely repentant.
If there are indeed no manufacturers who have been found yet who will take on the type of limited production jobs under discussion here, I believe one can easily be found in my neck of the woods. I can assist in making this happen as penance and restitution for my seemingly harsh words earlier today. Any thoughts or any interest in producing some USMMA flags in the next several months?

BTW: If anyone has had ANY success at all at finding ANY Challenge Coins at all relating to either the Academy, the Merchant Marine, or MARAD (U.S. Maritime Service), please pass along the info and the links. Again, I have been searching unsuccessfully. Best I've come up with are the "Christmas Ornament" and the "Lapel Pin". (http://www.usmmaaa.com/cgi-any/activities.dll)/show?sitename=USMMA&id=28&htmlfile=merch_cat.htm). I am referring here to the real thing... Challenge Coins. All other U.S. services have an active and vital challenge coin community. This whole subject may seem petty and inconsequential to some, but this is after all the "flags and devices" thread (and not the "life and death on the open seas" thread), and I hope that this is indeed the proper context to raise these issues, and not raise the hackles of my newly found admirers. - Cheers!

There are Academy challenge coins for sale in the nex. They have the seal on the front and a liberty ship with "in peace and war" and "deeds not words" on the reverse. I believe they are $8 a piece.

As for the "mutiny" discussion on pg 1.

There is a rule for candidates/plebe candidates/plebes that states that there can be no more than 5 of them in a room (in the barracks) at one time. The term for this is "plebe party"

I also noticed that the D.I.s are wearing light blue this year which is a departure from the yellow they wore in the past. The company officers are still in red

The Yellow DI shirts were not purchased in time for Indoc (as well as ringer PT shirts for 2013, which is why they are in white shirts). The yellow shirts have arrived and are being worn (except the lettering is in white, not black like it has been in previous years).

As for challenge coins there are also these. They are made available every year with the Academy seal on one side and the class seal with motto on the other. We have gotten one for evey year that our S has been at KP. We'll probably have to get several this year. The photo does not do them justice. They are large and finely detailed. Among the best I have ever seen.

I always find KP stuff on eBay. Just put "merchant marine" or "Kings Point" in search box. I've picked up old brochures, post cards, books, etc., and I have seen flags and challenge coins on there. I haven't looked lately, but there are always interesting items (and the usual rip-offs as well ).

The Academy flag used to be sold by the Colorado Parents Assoc. They no longer carry them because they can't find a supplier. The Mid-Atlantic Parents carry an Academy garden flag if anyone is interested in that.

Is there a copyright for the flags? I know someone that does clothing, maybe he can do a flag also

Usmma flags

2015 ARCHANGEL - I whole-heartedly agreed with your post. You are just proud of this wonderful school and would like it to be more widely regognized.I have been trying all year to find a USMMA flag but to no avail. I really wanted to have one for Memorial Day and for the 4th of July. It would be great if we could put our resources together and find another vendor who would be able to produce them. Im sure there would be people who would love to have them. Any thoughts?

Possible Flag Vendor

Stucki Embroidery Inc. (S.E.W. Inc.) on Route 28 in Boiceville NY is one of the largest flag manufacturers in the US. They are in the lower Catskill Region just NW of Kingston. If you have the appropriate computer file (jpeg??), they can embroider just about anything and their prices are very reasonable. Their phone is 914-657-2308. They could potentailly be a good vendor to make a custom flag. I have dealt with them on several projects. Their work is impecable and they are very nice to deal with.

Just remember to get permission as the USMMA logo/seal is copyrighted.
