Hi all!

Wanted to ask if there's any benefit to accepting my appointment now instead of later (in terms of paperwork, forms, or anything else really). I also wanted to ask if I do accept now, if my plans somehow change between now and I-day, can I withdraw my acceptance somehow? I am planning to attend USNA, but life happens and I just wanted to know if my acceptance is 'binding'. Any help would be great!

No benefit to accepting now or later in terms for you. The permit to report comes out at the same time. Mid-April or so if I remember. You can rescind your acceptance, you just call admissions and say you changed your mind.

.
After you push the accept button, you might get a few ToDo items in your in-basket:

- Local police check through your City or County police department

- Attestation form on visible or excessive body art and bolts

- Send in copies of your Birth certificate ( this one maybe later???)

… others can chime in on the exact details

You might want to get started right away if you have a lot to say about the first two items.
.

I can confirm that you are asked to send in proof of citizenship (could be your birth certificate) once you press “Accept.”

Also, you’ll have to sign a medical readiness form.

Birth certificate or passport ok? The certificate is in ny and tbey r a freaking pain besides highway robbery.

Ok. He hasnt accepted yet so no info. I was wondering as ny takes forever to get them sent etc
.
Here in Virginia … if you were Born in Virginia … you can walk into any VA Dept. of Motor Vehicles and have them Print an “Official Copy” of you or your child’s birth certificate. I think it’s about a $10 fee …. I think we requested about 5 copies to add to our stash.

Check out your local NY motor vehicles department … it can be scary.

NY is at the gvt building at last time was 35 each

To OP if you choose to wait to accept there really is no issue. Those who receive late appointments have time to get the permit to report done. It may mean some scrambling but it is doable.
For those who don’t have original birth certificates or shot records this would be the time to begin the process to obtain them regardless of your decision to accept or decline. You will most likely need them both moving forward with or without an SA acceptance.

Addressing the question at the core of the original post: As I understand it, you are Not bound to the US Navy or to the United States Naval Academy until the start of your 2nd Class (Junior) year when service commitment letters are signed. You don't show up on Iday, you quit during plebe year, you quit during you 3c (sophomore) year, no issues other than the paper work.

I think the only real constraint on you would be your conscious and karma if you accepted your appointment and elected to just not show up on IDay leaving a spot unfilled that others have held as a goal for years.

Sounds like you have some other options on the table still. My DD held her appointment letter for months, weighing other options. She'd laugh about it today her uncertainty today. She's 23 now; has more real friends than any person I know; Her confidence in herself is enviable. She is the leader of a team with responsibly for things that really matter. She received an amazing education surrounded by amazing classmates and the USN paid her while she completed her Masters in Security Studies at G-Town. Right now she's riding around out in the deep blue Pac right now. I don't know exactly where she is but in every note she sends she tells me how much she likes/loves her job. She will be 26 when she completes her service commitment, law school, med school, 3 letter agency's will be options. Ting is she's so happy where she is that I don't see her leaving.------My wife is sooo pissed!
"Dad you know that XYZ event in the news? Yup, that went down on my watch. We saw some shipt that night, but my team kicked ass!"

Chose wisely................... good luck to you whatever you decide.

How exactly does the local police check work? Is there a form I personally have to fill out or do I have to get someone else to sign it? Just wondering since I live overseas and I am not sure how I would go about that process (I'd obviously have to ask admissions for more specific details but just wondering about the basics)

There is a Police Record Check Form that will have to be filled out by any local law enforcement agencies (and sent to Admissions by the agency). For a typical U.S. resident, this would include: State Police, City Police and County Sherif Depts. However, many (if not most) Police agencies are under policies or State Laws prohibiting giving out this type of information (example Texas). If that's the case...simply write a letter to USNA Admissions and inform them of the agencies you asked and which said "no thanks". I'm not sure how this applies if your living overseas...best is to ask Admissions as my information is from 2019.

I had a question in regards to being notified of an appointment. Did you find out you received an appointment from your CIS login or did a MOC call/email you? I want to know if it's pointless to check my login every day whether or not I've been appointed lol.
