Hello everyone,

I've been wondering this for some time now and just wanted to see if anyone possibly had an answer. On the application, it only requests the ACT math and english scores for the standardized testing. Are the science and reading scores not taken into account, or the overall ACT score? I have a 31 composite, with a 34 english, 24 math, 34 reading, and 31 science. I know that the math score is the most important score, but I was just wondering if the board cared at all about my science score.

I am only guessing that once you turn in a copy of your scores they would be able to see your full score. Also it depends on NROTC vs. AROTC. From my (mom/previous Army) that NROTC looks more at the math/science scores. Good luck and great scores!!!!

Your post leaves us filling in some details on what you need - I'm guessing you're referring to NROTC by the description? Marine or Navy? NROTC navy option does look at your math and English scores in quantifying your min score - they tell you this directly. They also receive all scores including your composite when you submit them.

NROTC has minimum scores for each path as outlined in the requirements for Navy option scholarships. Many NROTC sites spell this out too - official example here: https://nrotc.duke.edu/frequently-asked-questions
  • Navy
    • SAT- 540 Math; 550 Verbal; combined 1150 Math and Verbal
    • ACT- 21 Math; 22 English; 47 combined Math and English
  • Marine
    • SAT- 1000 combined Math and Verbal
    • ACT- minimum composite score of 22
    • Armed Forces Qualification Test: 74
Further, the application instructions themselves clearly spell out Navy option, marine option and nurse option criteria.

You have some impressive specific scores. Reading your post, your skewed/ lowest score is in Math - Do they care that you excelled in areas that don't factor into their minimum requirements? What is it you are seeking, offsetting credit for excelling in other areas while doing comparatively less well in Math? I'd redirect that energy, not churn over that. Math skills are important to the navy for many positions. But think bigger picture here - Navy looks at the "whole person" in evaluating candidates- grades, standardized tests as outlined, and how are you a leader in the classroom, athletic teams, community - scholar, athlete, leader, civic impact in your communities. Can you articulate why you wish to serve in a way that passes a seasoned military leader's sniff test? Do you have all that, and stand-out/ make impact? Then your fine albeit low(er) Math ACT score won't matter. Are you pursuing a major in which math is critical? Others may comment buy my recommendation would be to not fixate on this but be confident in your overall package, if you have a good one. Go for it to apply and best of luck - thank you for your willingness to serve.

Sidenote: Navy-option Navy NROTC midshipmen have to get through two semesters of Calc and Physics So factor that into your planning on where you may wish to train to serve. Can you buckle in and get through that? Would you prefer to train in an area that doesn't emphasize the need for math skills? Marines, Army come to mind. Tier 3 majors in the navy, some of them, come to mind too. Really learn about the mission of each branch and factor that into where you would wish to serve, and what you'll need to do to get there. Learn about the roles you may serve in in each branch, and also the roles you may serve in if you don't get your first or second choice. Think too about what major you are pursuing and how that aligns with your clearly exceptional talents.
