Adjustment disorder dq

My son spoke with a therapist during COVID and remote schooling. He was asked for a diagnosis, but only provided one for insurance purposes which he stated in additional documentation sent to DoDMERB for a waiver denial appeal. He stated that my son did not present with any symptoms of an adjustment disorder and the diagnosis was solely for insurance purposes. He also stated that my son did not have and should not have the diagnosis, and that "therapy " was supportive. My son's waiver denial appeal was denied, and his LOA and application withdrawn. He wants to reapply next cycle for the fall of 2023 because he wants to serve our country and attend West Point. My question is this: if my son's counselor has stated that my son does not have an adjustment disorder and counseling was supportive only, is there a chance that he will be granted a waiver when he reapplies? Or , is this DQ permanent and therefore he will never be considered for an appointment? I feel responsible and heartbroken for him because I was ignorant at the process and failed in helping him navigate. Attending West Point was his dream.

These links may help to understand disqualifications and waivers:

@MullenLE is the Guru who can give your son the best answers available. He will likely pop up and offer his help to your son.

That link to DODI is the wrong version. The one you linked is for RETENTION and is vastly different than version 1 for appointment, enlistment or induction.

Thank you. He will reapply next year. He’s is not and does not meet the criteria for adjustment disorder, so I will do everything I can do get further documentation for him. He is already preparing physically and getting his letters of rec. he will not give up. In the meantime, he will study engineering at one of the best tech universities in NYS until he can get appointed.

Please see the thread below. A similar situation but the timing was different which is one of many, many variables that could result in a different outcome. We reacted similarly to you, wondering if a choice we made in his best interest, would impact his opportunities later in life. Still, we wouldn't have done it differently, as we did what was best for him at the time, and that doesn't change because a particular process sees it differently. More importantly, we had to have faith in a waiver process that is very thorough. Some good advice from parents on this forum helped get us through this moment and so I'm sharing with you here. I hope things work our for your DS.

Sorry I got the wrong version of DoDI 61303, thought it looked different. 😔 I will do better!
