Something worth considering when looking at USCGA are the opportunities for continued advanced studies after graduation.
It was just announced that LT. J.G. Joe DiRenzo IV, a 2010 mechanical engineering academy graduate has won a Fulbright Scholarship to pursue a master's degree course of study in sustainable energy at the Norwegian Technical University.
The announcement relates the United States and Norway are both maritime nations and Norway has developed a renewable energy science program for maritime applications. The Norway Technical University program was selected because of its "research-oriented curriculum with real-world applications" that can contribute to renewable energy programs in the Coast Guard fleet.
LT. J.G. DiRenzo is currently serving aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Vigilant, in Port Canaveral, Florida. He graduated from the academy in 2010 with a degree in mechanical engineering with high honors. This is his second Fulbright Scholarship since graduating from the academy!
