Good evening everyone I am currently a community college student at Miramar College in SD but currently going to move to Santa Barbara City College, I emailed the AFROTC Recruiting Officer and he said it wasn't possible for me to be a crosstown student from SBCC but I have to be at UCSB, I just want advice on how to obtain any scholarship for ROTC or if I am really SOL and have to go through OTS...anyone at AFROTC at UCLA would be appreciated thank you.

The problem you might be facing is not only the xtown aspect, but to commission via AFROTC you must have been a POC for at least 3 semesters. To become a POC you must attend SFT. If you are transferring over as a junior next fall with an intended graduation date of May 2019 than you will not have the 3 semesters as a POC since you would not go to SFT until summer 2018. Thus, you would not be able to commission until Dec 2109.

I don't believe there are any 2 yr scholarships for AFROTC except if the det. is offering a campus based AFROTC scholarship. I would think it would be highly unlikely that if the det. has any 2 yr scholarships available they would offer it to you over another cadet that has been in the program for longer than you.

Scholarships for AFROTC cadets are the minority, less than 18% of all cadets are scholarship recipients.

You may not initially qualify for a scholarship, but you should be able to participate in the AFROTC DET at UCSB as a POC via cross-town, then go to camp after graduation. However, it all depends on timing and the numbers. Recommend not discounting the OTS route, as it is a great option if necessary. And seriously: good luck!

FWIW AFROTC is beginning a 2 year program for juniors/sr's where one will start as a POC & wrap everything up within 2 yrs.

Is it really worth the 2 year condensed training? When would I take the AFOQT? I would want time to study and prepare myself for it.

Honestly I couldn't tell you man. I guess I'd have to say it's whatever you'd want to make of it. You hear about 250s- they have condensed training but it wouldn't be nearly as bad as the two year AFROTC stint. However...If you're worried about the AS classes, don't be. They can be taken back to back & overlapping with ease- which is what they would offer.

I am not sure how FT will work. I don't know of anyone who is doing this 2 year program, as it has just been ok'd this fall (it's not really publicly advertised for whatever reason)- I only know cadre at dets here & there who have talked about it (for better or worse...) But if you're worried about field training, don't be...

I am getting the gist you're more worried about the time commitment of cramming everything in- understandable. AFOQT is another bridge to cross. I won't say you don't need to study crazily (I failed 1st time so I studied crazily the 2nd go around) but I have two full AFOQT PDF practice exams with answers you can utilize. Just PM me. And recall- there's only a handful of sections you truly need to pass with flying colors (verbal, math, & quantitative? Someone verify that?) so you don't necessarily need to study the entirety of the test (science, block counting, etc) unless you want to pursue a rated AFSC (then you will want to focus on aviation, block counting or whatever else)...

Also UCSB has the party school stigma attached to it for a reason! 2 of my best friends attended UCSB, friend's sibling is there right now. I loved visiting on weekends from NorCal. You'll want to experience DP, etc. but just remember your goals (officership/commissioning) if you decide to go through with it so you don't do anything that would derail your commissioning...

Edit: ofc your other option is OTS if officership is what you seek, but I haven't a clue what manning #s currently are or are projected to be- but I would ask yourself what your goals are post-grad.. if rated is what you seek I believe I have read around OTS rated slots have/will continue to increase? Not sure. You'll have to do some leg work!

My non-military DD was a Gaucho. Yes, UCSB (especially the IV community) is crazy but it teaches you to be disciplined if you graduate despite the distractions.

If you are open to considering Army ROTC, it is possible in some AROTC programs to enter AROTC as a rising junior and then "catch up" by attending Summer Basic Camp training (formerly CIET). Once Basic camp is done, you may be competitive for a 2 year scholarship at the AROTC school. You can either contract with scholarship or contract without one and if all goes well, commission either AD or reserves upon graduation. (Active duty is not guaranteed in AROTC, unlike AF and Navy).

If this is of interest to you, you might inquire to the Recruiting Operations Officer at UCSB AROTC and ask if you can participate in AROTC while attending cross town at SBCC during the Spring of 2017.

I am not in interested in Army to be honest, does not fit my goals as an officer and career.

I won't say you don't need to study crazily

I just want to be prepared, and apply for a Rated slot. Especially if they don't come by, I am trying to get a 99 on Pilot and CSO and then plug in my flight hours for that sweet sweet extra PCSM score haha

block counting

Stoopid question but block counting is neccessary and goes to pilot criteria?? Thanks

You'll want to experience DP

Parties are nice every once and in a while, but I know this sounds cheesy but I rather study than party. Don't get me wrong, social life is important and it's healthy, I will be afraid of doing something stupid and would not representing the Air Force well.

I really want to tackle down this hurdle to be a student
@Vretro PM sent man for AFOQT...
