AFROTC 2017 Selections

Understand that reboarding can occur because they want to see a larger pool size before they make their decision. IOWS you may be on the cusp between a type 2 and type 7, with only 15% given a type 2 than they may say wait on them to see if there are more coming down the line that would go type 2.

The same is true if a candidate is on the cusp of a type 7 and nothing.

My son just texted me. He received a Type 1, Any approved major scholarship!

Was this a Commander's Leadership Selection from one particular college?
Or can he use this at any college of his choosing?

It didn't specify any one particular college. This is what he received : Congratulations! We have conditionally selected you to receive a 4-Year, Type 1, Any Approved Major, Air Force ROTC college scholarship. Your selection is a significant first step on your journey to success and was based on your scholarship selection board ranking, academic major choice and the number of scholarships available in each academic category. Your offer will cover full annual tuition and fees, a textbook allowance and at least a $300 monthly stipend during the school year.

Thank you! We knew Type 1 was good, but did't realize that this was so special until reading it here. We are so excited for him. Still waiting to hear on admissions from a couple of schools. Congrats to you ...2 daughters getting Type 1.. and one to Yale!! What an accomplishment for both of them!

It is basically a Type 1, BUT offered from the det at that 1 college. IOWS, if offered it to Yale, like pv123, you can't now take it to Princeton like you can with the HSSP.

Additionally, unless things have changed if you are offered the Commander's scholarship you will be given a very short window to accept it, think days, not weeks. Some have been given about 72 hrs to either accept or reject.

If you select this option you must remove your name from that national board. This can be an issue for a multitude of reasons.
1. Usually they offer this before the 1st AFROTC board meets. You are now tied to that 1 school.
2. The offer may come before admission boards meet for that school.

Thus, if you accept that guaranteed type 1 from the Commander instead of going to the HSSP board and that college does not accept you than you have lost the money. Flip side is if you turn it down and only get a type 2 or 7, and later on find out you were accepted to the school, again you lost money because now HQ AFROTC is going to not pay the entire tuition.

It is a risk. Typically the Commander scholarship is used like a recruitment tool or an LOA in the SA world. Rare, few and far between.

Thanks Pima! Interesting gamble, especially if at a school like Yale.

It can be given out once a year by each Det Commander. Usually 2 weeks decision. Commanders only give out to students knowing that college is their 1st choice and talks with admission beforehand. Commanders do not waste their one chance to give out a CLS to someone who doesn't really want one or where they would not be accepted. They also schedule special interviews for this selection over the phone or in person. Immediately after receiving a CLS my daughter received a Likely Letter from admissions. Not much of a gamble at all.

Thanks. That's interesting. How do the school's ROTC detachments know of the applicant's desires? Does the kid contact them to let them know their school is #1 and that they've applied to AFROTC?

They reach out with interviews over phone, Skype, or in person.

On the HSSP application a student lists their top three universities. Commanders can go over that as well as any student who visits the det and shows interest and promise. From these examples a commander can make a list to interview very "interested" and promising applicants to interview for that Commanders Scholarship once a year. Commanders do not have to choose anyone if there are no matches.

Thanks for the info! Hmmm, my daughter got a Type 2 and was accepted at MIT early. I wonder if the command can offer her a Commanders Scholarship when she matriculates. It's be nice to have a little extra money toward tuition. :)

Commanders Selection is only offered to HSSP applicants. But, I do know that this past fall at MIT they upgraded a cadet (I think a sophomore) from a type 2 to a type 1. She was very surprised and happy. My daughter was there to witness it.
Congrats for MIT -- just won national award for best Det. And best Cadet.

Thanks, my daughter was pretty surprised. She also got an ISR from Navy, but leans AF since her mom is retired AF (dang that money difference though). And we saw that news about the unit and the cadet. They seem like they have a great commander, and it's nice that she's a she given that my daughter is a she (if that makes sense :)). Are you associated with the detachment? Oh, what is an HSSP?

HSSP (High School Scholarship Program) is what the scholarship is named that she received. My senior daughter desperately wants to be a part of MIT Det 365 through its crosstown Harvard. She loves the detachment more than the school -hahaa. I was very impressed with it as well! Crossing my fingers they'll both be at the Det together this fall:)
I thought your daughter was there when I read that she witnessed the cadet getting their Type 1. My daughter is also waiting to hear from Harvard for regular decision. So you may have Harvard and Yale daughters? That'll be interesting.
