AFROTC Det Commander Meeting

Good day everyone.

I am reboarded to the next AFROTC board. My family live overseas and my officer interview was with an ALO from another overseas location, not with an AFROTC det officer as I was expecting.

Today I received an email from the AFROTC Det Commander of my first choice school. He wanted to setup a meeting to discuss my interest with the school's AFROTC program. I do not want to read too much into this meeting, but I am wondering if this is normal. Has anyone experienced the same thing?

I figured everything is set once my package was sent to the first board and just waiting to get accepted to schools and hopefully win scholarship on one of the boards. So this was a surprise to me.

Thank you for any insight.

The AFROTC detachment at one school my DS applied to reached out with a nice letter and offer to meet when he was a HS Senior. He met with them via zoom. They offered a shadow opportunity (pre-Covid when interested HS seniors would stay overnight with a ROTC participant, attend classes and drill, etc), and they also offered unit support should he receive a scholarship he wanted to convert to a 3 year and need support. It was early but the gesture was appreciated - he also got a good sense these leaders cared about those in their command, and they were very honest in answering questions about how many people don't make it to commision and why. I recommend - go for it. Organize a list of questions that are thoughtful, show interest in his unit. Research the detachment and cadre and show you've done your HW. Let us know how it works out please.

I was thinking that this sounds like a ‘recruiting to my school’ by the detachment commander. A good opportunity to get a feel for that school. Cultures are different at different places.

My boys both visited their number one schools u, pre-Covid. It really is a great way to ‘try on’ the school and unit.

Good luck!

This has nothing to do with your package. It's a great opportunity to find out more about the unit and how it's run. Every unit has differences. Write down a list of questions you might have to ask in preparation for the phone call. Definitely take advantage of this opportunity.

Oh, you're correct not to read too much into the meeting.

Did you happen to apply to your first choice for EA or ED? I ask because out of my three kids only my daughter had a phone call with the Det Commander. And that was because she applied early to a selective school and the Det Commander was offering her a bump to Type 1 if she accepted the early admission.
Who knows what may come about but it is a great opportunity nonetheless. And as kinnem writes though, have some questions thought out beforehand. And they can be simple questions about balancing college life and ROTC. Or summer opportunities like Project Go.
Good luck!

Back when I did my interview with one of the cadre of the det I wound up going to I got offered a room and board scholarship. Do not think that that is common at all, but hey, mayyyybe.

Good morning everyone.

Thank you all for the advice given. Scheduled for tomorrow. We'll see how it goes.

I applied Early Action to the school but have not gotten word yet.

Keep your fingers crossed or say a prayer if you're so inclined that maybe this has to do with EA. In any event it'll be a good phone call to have. Good luck!

Hello again everyone.

It was a short meeting, 10 minutes tops. He asked why the Air Force and why the school. I didn't even get to ask questions... Commander is offering me the scholarship.

Wow, I did not expect that at all. I guess I did not do a thorough enough search in this board to learn about Det Commander being able to offer scholarship outside of the national board. I know about the Commander's in college scholarship.

I was also interviewed for ISR for NRTOC but I still haven't received official word yet. And I have not yet been offered admission to the school which is number one for both AF and NROTC. USAFA and USNA are really long shots for me but I still applied.

I've been a lurker on this board since I started my process last spring for academy and ROTC applications, and this forum had been very helpful. Intimidating at times when I see other applicants' stats but nevertheless lots of valuable discussions and insights.

Congrats! So that offer is only acceptance at that school, right?
I'd guess that given he must know you haven't been accepted but he still offered you the scholarship, then maybe he has some pull at that school's admission office. You might consider including in your thank you f/u email a question of how that works. But you should include that this choice is your first choice. If the school is not your first choice you could just email your thank you and include that you're anxiously awaiting whether you've been admitted.
Personally, if you have a person actively working for your admission then it would be ehhical to accept that no matter what else you're offered. When my daughter was offered her's by the commander she thought long and hard to make sure that this would be her top choice so that when she said yes, she stayed the course.
Good luck!

My DD was offered the Commander's Scholarship. The only caveat is that if you accept, it pulls you out of the national board review. However, for DD, as soon as she said yes to the Commander, WINGS had her offer within hours for the scholarship. It moved very quickly after that inital YES.

Congrats if you decide to do it!

I know for my DD, the other 100s in her Detachment speculate who the freshman is with the CSL, but only her closest buds know it's her. I'll let you know, she feels a little added pressure wanting to live up to the Commander's expectations, but on the other hand, the Cadre already know her, unlike most of the other 70 or so freshman trying to make a name for themselves. So it's a Catch-22.

Yes, I emailed him right away after the meeting to let him know I am still waiting for admission to the school. His response was
'Ok, thanks for letting me know".

I verbally accepted during the interview but he gave me time to speak to my parents.

He may have some pull with admissions as well. Depends on the school.

Last update Folks:

I've been admitted to the school, so things are lining up so far.

Thanks again everyone for the encouragement and advice.
Congrats! The commander must have been able to work some admission magic. Nice to have your college choice settled so you can just enjoy the end of your senior year in high school - just don't enjoy it too much. :)

It totally depends on the school. I know for my DD, the Commander said he has "spots" reserved with admissions to use at his discretion (provided the students meet the requirements of the university for admission.)
