I am a current freshman in college with the goal of becoming a military aviator. My school offers both AFROTC and NROTC, and I am asking you all to see which has a higher chance of getting a slot? I know it varies by year and school, but any input it appreciated!

I'm told AF has more pilot slots but of those, a lower percentage are fighter/bomber slots per pilot cohort than the Navy which has fewer pilot slots but a higher percentage of fighter pilot within those slots.

A lot can and will happen between now and MOS assignment that will determine your active-duty role. While it’s great to aim for a specific job, know that you may not get it. So here’s another perspective to consider: If you can’t be a pilot, which of the branches can you see yourself still thriving in? Which culture and mission best for you? Which one seems like your tribe?

My DS chose AFROTC over NROTC because he wants to fly C-17s, not the typical cadet who wants to fly tactical / bomber aircraft, but MidCakePa summed it up best.

Thank you, that is a great way to look at it!

I told my son that no matter how good of a pilot you are, if you cant land on an aircraft carrier, you cant be a pilot in the Navy. He went through AFROTC and is now a B-52 bomber pilot. I

USMC PLC gives "Aviation Guarantees" way before NROTC or NROTC-MO Service selection. Even as an "Incoming Freshman".
Google is your friend for stats, qualification standards, etc. and start with your local Marine OSO (Officer Selection Officer)

I second what MidCakePa said. There is no guarantee in military aviation. If you don’t make it which branch would you rather be in? As a prior enlisted service member, USN & USAF, I can tell you there is a difference. All ships rock and roll & every tarmac is hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Both USN Aviators and USAF Pilots will have collateral duty that is not flying. IMHO both USN & USAF are premier services on the aviation side of the house. Good luck to you!
