AFROTC Waiver

My son received an AFROTC Tier 2 Scholarship but has been denied a waiver due to asthma. We did not have an opportunity to submit any personal medical records or documentation of his physical history (track, cross country, road race times). Is there any chance that the AF ROTC medical review board will look at new documentation and reverse their decision?

Isufan -- forgive me for asking -- did your DS receive a "waiver denied" message from AFROTC, or did he receive a "medically disqualified" or "DQ" from DoDMERB?

If it is a "waiver denied" message from AFROTC, he might inquire with AF ROTC if there are remedial/additional testing he can do and ask if there is an appeal process.

If it is a "medically disqualified" or "DQ" from DoDMERB, you will most likely be asked to do additional testing and/or provide additional information

He currently has "pending waiver review" from USA.

AFROTC shows "medical waiver denied." We are working on getting new information uploaded to DOD website and have been told that new information will be reviewed by the review board. Don't know if there is a chance though. If he can't get approved, he will not have his scholarship. Have been told by so many others that getting a waiver should not be a problem with his proof of physical ability and no impact from asthma. So upset that his case is not being reviewed based on his individual circumstances.

Isufan -- Asthma can be a difficult topic -- if you put Asthma in the "Search Tool" in the upper right of the page, you will get a number of threads with good information on the Asthma situation, people who got waivers, what they had to do, etc. There are also the stories of those that did not get a waiver.

As you probably know, each SA has its own medical waiver authority and each ROTC has its own medical waiver authority . . . it has been our experience however that the SA and the ROTC within the same Service (USNA and NROTC; USMA and AROTC; USAFA and AFROTC) tend to make similar medical waiver judgements and determinations . . .

Sincere best wishes to you . . . and thank you to your DS for his willingness to serve . . . others on here may be able to advise you on what they did for their Asthma

Isufan,
I hope that AFROTC will clear him. That is stressful, I'm sure, to say the least. We're in a similar situation, DS received AFROTC scholarship a week ago but has a DQ for a previous knee issue (fully resolved, no surgery). We were told by dodmerb that a waiver will automatically be requested by AFROTC because of scholarship offer. But how long will it take to get an answer? DS needs to make a decision on which school by 5/1. How long did it take for you to receive a waiver decision? USAFA has yet to start waiver process at all.
Thanks.

You need to keep in mind that they are only allowed so many waivers per year for various conditions. They may have reached that limit.
You also make a big assumption that they didn't review him based on his individual circumstances. You don't know that they didn't. Not everyone makes the cut.

I do know they didn't review him based on his individual circumstances because all they had to go on was a YES box with a check in it next to asthma. They did not request any of his medical records from his doctors or request any tests be done. What happens when kids decide to check No; is there no followup? They can just get an appointment and then show up on day one having asthma...If it is well controlled and you can do any activity with your preventative, then those kids should be looked at closer.

But they did know about his athletics when determining whether to pursue a waiver. The waiver authority had far more info to look at than DoDMERB did.

No they did not have all of those records either. We were told on the phone by DODMERB that we would be notified through email when the review began and we could submit other documentation then. Well, we were not notified, so no other documents were available (all of the official times for the multiple races every season for the past 8 years, documentation from doctors and coach about the ability to competitively participate year round). I know there are lots of kids that apply, but they need to come up with a better system because I am sure they miss out on some exceptional leaders because they only see certain boxes with a check mark.
