Hello, I have some questions I wanted to ask the community. I am currently a FIrst-semester sophomore and I am switching to a new school that has an Air Force ROTC unit. I know the Air Force ROTC has a 3-year requirement for commissioning. I have completed one semester of Army ROTC and 3 Semesters of Air Force JROTC. I was wondering if it was possible for either of the experience for me to be eligible to attempt a commission in the Air Force ROTC. I currently have 2 and 1/2 semesters of college left. Thank you.

Why not stay Army? I am not sure if AFROTC can enroll you at this point, if so, you are at an extreme disadvantage, as after Sophomore year they make the selections for the Summer field training and continuation in the program.

Like what Mohawk said, you would definitely be at a massive disadvantage joining this late in the game if it is even possible. Air Force selection rates for field training are projected to continue to be very low for the next few years so even if you did manage to get approved to switch you would be competing for a highly competitive spot against people who have already proved themselves in the organization.

Please call the Air Force detachment at your new school, introduce yourself, and ask these questions. To confirm your options. Then please update the board with what you find out about options. Too bad you didn’t have two years in at JROTC. Could have helped with a credit.

Overall a new school and a new branch you might rethink your stance on finishing without an extra semester or two if it would get you to a path to commission. Also should explore OCS too.

Good luck.

I think you need to have a minimum of three years of Rotc. I would assume it would be 3 years of the same Rotc. Having said that, there are plenty of cadets who go from AFROTC to Rotc because they don't get selected for Field Training and therefore cant continue to year 3. If you can do that, it would seem that the 2 years of AFROTC would transfer to Rotc. That would give me the impression that the 1 semester of Rotc you took would transfer. As Herman Snerd said above. call the detachment and ask them these questions. You would still be at a disadvantage as others have said especially regarding getting invited to Field Training.

Definitely talk to your detachment for further clarification, but here's how my det works. There are 3 classifications for people who join AFROTC depending on when they join. There's AS100 which join traditionally fall of their freshman year and during their sophomore year, they are classified as AS200s. There's AS150 who join spring of their freshman year who are also 200s during their sophomore year. And finally, there are AS250s who traditionally join fall of Sophomore year.I have seen Juniors come in as "sophomores", or AS250s in the Fall. Additionally, you also may be able to come in as a AS150 this upcoming semester (Spring 2022) and then be a 200 in the Fall of 2022.

Also, someone said that if you fail to get into Field Training, you're dropped. Actually, you can come back as an AS500 and "redo" your AS200 year and compete for an EA (Field Training ticket).

Your options are still open and I say try and get in if you can. Best of luck to you!
