This question was asked 10yrs ago on this forum, looking for current answer. "Does the cadet/midn get reimbursed for airfare to the campus for the campus specific NSO in August."

Your DD should be getting instructions from her unit, but yes, they are reimbursed for travel to campus to begin their first year. I believe the language is something like "most economical means available" or something like that, so mileage if you live close and drive and there is a set airfare reimbursement rate. For DS we chose to drive when he began, which was by no means the most economical means (but a fantastic bonding road trip). He was reimbursed for what airfare would have been.

My DS had travel costs to and from campus covered if needed. We are in driving distance, so it was not needed.

* slight addition of info: Reimbursement for these ROTC participant first trips to campus is applicable for scholarship recipients.

For AROTC it is limited to 4 year recipients. If not accessed directly to AD after they commission they should also receive reimbursement for travel back to their home of record.
So once a cadet contracts for his or her 4-yr AROTC scholarship they are able to apply for travel reimbursement? Is this for military travel on orders such as Cadet troop Leadership, Advance camp, AA School, or Airborne school? Or will they pay for Thanksgiving Break and Christmas Break travel too?

I cannot speak with certainty to AROTC, but I highly suspect it is the same as NROTC. NROTC only reimbursed for initial travel to report to the unit, not for travel to and from breaks, summers, etc; or even to return to campus in subsequent years. Travelling on orders to training is handled directly through the unit. Someone in the unit staff (HR clerk I believe) makes the travel arrangements, so there is no upfront expense from the midn/cadet.

In our experience it is the same in AROTC. However, the HRA did not make travel arrangements for initial travel to school, only for travel on orders during the school years.

How long did it take to get reimbursement for initial travel to school for your 4yr AROTC winner? DS’s school has facilitated CLIP-B pay but not this. They seemed to not know?? Maybe they wait until cadet reports again as MSII?

Yes, that is what I meant as well. Initial travel to the unit was on the incoming midn.

Generally the travel documentation is submitted early in the MSI year when they contract. Your cadet needs to contact the HRA at their school or host school. Not all HRA's are skilled or care so sometimes the cadet has to push. Have them reach out to their MS primary instructor if the HRA isn't helpful. The primary regulation is AR145-1. Maybe @Montana State Army ROTC or @MohawkArmyROTC can provide suggestions.

He’s done all that. Hopefully the last request when he submitted the CLIP-B to HRA will do it. You’re exactly right, though. I don’t think that person knows much about it, as most cadets don‘t come from across the country.
