AIT before College

How long should it take to get orders for AIT? He's split ops and completed BCT last summer as a junior and will be graduating in June. The recruiter told us that he's playing the waiting game for his orders. Is there anyone else we should be asking to find out about his orders besides his recruiter? Not sure when he will leave for AIT. He's a 3 year AROTC winner, so wants to make it back in time for college. He checked with his commanding officer for Army Reserves and they said that the recruiter handles this. I know we are on Army time and have to be patient but feel like we should know more by now. Any suggestions? Thanks

Just to understand, your son received a 3yr Scholarship from one of the 3 National Boards this year, and he is enlisted in the Reserves, has completed BCT and is awaiting orders for AIT. From my understanding they can't be enlisted in the Reserves and be on a standard AROTC Scholarship at the same time. From what I have read he would need to be released from the Reserves in order to take advantage of the 3yr scholarship. The other option would be to remain in the Reserves and have the scholarship converted into a GRFD Scholarship that would mean he would serve his service obligation in the Reserves with no opportunity for Active Duty.

Does the ROO/Battalion at the school he will be attending know that he is enlisted in the Reserves, have they given you any guidance or advice or explained how the scholarships work in regard to enlistment?

I could be wrong and maybe one of the ROOs that post here will offer some advice, but this was my understanding.

Thank you for your response. Yes, he's split ops and completed BCT last year and from what we understand he has to complete AIT since the AROTC scholarship isn't effective till his Sophomore year. They would then release him from his Reserve contract to accept the 3yr scholarship. The ROO at the college told us to keep moving up the chain of command if we don't receive any answers about his orders but we're at a stand still now. With graduation less than 2 months away we were hoping to have his orders by now. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

That makes sense.

Having two sons on Active Duty I can sympathize with the waiting. Seems like everything is last minute when it comes to notifications and even then they seem to change. Wish I could offer more. Best of luck to your son.

Thank you... Do you think the orders would be coming from the Recruiter though? Wasn't sure if Reserves would be handling this. Or perhaps he would be notified by mail. Thanks again!!

I'm sorry but I don't have any experience with enlisted AIT. I would have your son keep contacting his Reserve chain of command, the recruiter will most likely just be a conduit for information and not the one's that would handle orders.

My son did the same split opts program for National Guard. His orders came from the unit he was assigned to. He did AIT last summer right before he started college and was home in time to start college. He decided not to do ROTC and has 2 years done for NG now.

Thank you... I will have him follow up with his command at Reserves. Happy to hear he made it back in time for college!!

If you don't mind me asking, how much notice did he get before he left for AIT?

He had about a months notice. I think he left on June 25 and got back August 24/25? He was in Ft. Benning. He got back on a Friday and started college on the Monday. We had his stuff moved into his dorm while he was at AIT. He is doing another training this summer and hopes to have his orders this weekend for that one.

He is doing good. two years in already and he is not 20 yet. He did Basic between junior and senior of high school, and AIT between senior and freshman years. He completes his first year of college today. So far so good. His brother got the 4 year ROTC scholarship so he will outrank him eventually!! LOL.

Don't know if your son is living on campus, but just call the campus and explain the situation. They were great for us.

That's awesome for both of them!! My daughter is thinking about the Army Nursing program. We will see. It's amazing to watch their plans come together. Fingers crossed that AIT can fit in between graduation and the start of college. Just having an idea when to expect the orders and from who is a big help. Thank you!
