I send out an "assignment" for the candidates I'm going to interview. It has some situational questions, some questions that seem innocuous (what's your favorite color? Why?), and a couple that if you know the STAR method, you'll give me really great information for YOUR write-up. Then I will ask for "three people that if I wanted to call and ask about you, you'd recommend."
Sometimes I've actually called; usually when I am writing and find I have a great bullet in mind but...I need a tweak or two.
Mostly this is just to give me an initial impression as to how the candidate thinks. It also is a great source of information to start the interview in a very "friendly, non-threatening manner." I find I get much more information out of candidates this way.
But it's truly "to each their own."
But to answer the original question: USAFA does not require this for ALO evaluations.
