Am I reading a situation wrong?

So I recently received an email from the assistant men's water polo coach which basically said to email them when I submit my application so they can "flag my record in admissions as a recruited water polo player." The problem is that for one reason or another this has been sitting in my spam folder for quite a long time. So when I saw it today I replied saying that my application was submitted and so on, however I'm confused about two things:

1. Does this mean I'm actually recruited to play water polo there or am I just reading it wrong?

And

2. Am I screwed because I didn't reply sooner?

Also I'm worried because the Academy might be on spring break right now so the coach might not be able to reply for a while (I know, karma right?) any help is greatly appreciated!

I’m not too keen when it comes to recruited athletes. However, I do have a good friend that is committed to play hockey at USAFA. He had the option to come up this year or next, depending on if he wanted to start or not. They said that he needed to let them know by the end of March if he wanted to go this year. From that I would go on a hunch and say that the intercollegiate athletics department has a similar timeline, end of March to finish recruitment. If that’s the case then you may be okay. Again, that’s by no means official in any way, just a bit of info, so take it as you will. I think it would be a good idea to call the coach if you can to get some clarification. Good luck!

I have to imagine any help they would have given you never happened and yes you would have been recruited to play polo. Since you never responded they probably think you never applied or if you got lucky they saw your application

1. Yes
2. Probably
3. Always check your spam folder when checking your mail, or some other regular schedule.

If you have a phone# for the coach, call and honestly explain what happened. Emphasize your commitment to USAFA (if true) as demonstrated by your completed application. Say you understand it may be too late to receive any assistance in terms of admission, but if you earn an appointment or prep school spot, you remain committed to playing water polo at USAFA.
One thing to remember is while USAFA is a competitive Division 1 school, coaches have fewer athletes to choose from because of the unique admission requirements of the SA's and the fact that many athletes don't want to commit to military service, go through BCT, etc. Also, athletes get injured, drop out, get cold feet, change their minds, etc.
If they recruited you they will probably be happy to hear from you. If you don't receive an appointment off your MOC slate, maybe the coaches can still put in a word for the national pool, if you are a competitive candidate.

You should have the coach's phone number, and a little surprised, because SAs are actually allowed to call athletes long before the rest of D1 colleges because of the length of time that the application process takes. Definitely call the coach as soon as possible and explain the situation. The road for ICs (intercollegiate athletes) is a tough one at SAs but well worth it in the end.
