Annapolis recommendations

My hot take is you should flaneur around downtown annapolis WITHOUT doing a ton of research beforehand. It’s a lot of fun exploring the shops and restaurants there on your own. Walk from the Academy gate up to the state capital and in that mile you’ll discover some cool spots along the way.
Bonus points for using flâneur in a sentence. Très Bien!

I'm kinda old school...no visit to Annapolis is complete without 1) Breakfast at Chick 'n Ruth's (bonus for being there for Pledge of Allegiance)
I just sent an Annapolis loving friend to Chick and Ruth's and they could not get over how much they enjoyed it. Definitely a new
customer for the long term.

Lots of great suggestions! Thank you!!

Where are some scenic safe running routes/trails? Assuming weather will cooperate.

No real trails to speak of in Annapolis. You go a little north across the Severn River bridge from the Academy and there is a thing called the B&A Trail which parallels Rt. 2, is basically flat, and paved.

If you run in the main town, be prepared for a lot of stop and go.

Outside of downtown a bit is Quiet Waters Park, which has some short trails to run within the park. It is at the start of the Hillsmere Shores neighborhood (where my parents live and I grew up). Not enough to get a good run in unless you do loops.

Had a similar situation to you last summer. Tons of great recommendations on here and everyone has their favorites. When it all came down to it though we just went for it. It's hard to plan for how you might feel or what you may be in the mood for before or after a big travel day. We enjoyed just strolling down the streets and checking things out. One cool thing IMO is you don't necessarily need to commit to a big sit down one and done meal. My wife and I just stopped at one place for a smallish lobster roll, then kept strolling for a crab cake, although it wasn't where you'd expect. we were able to kinda eat and explore doing it that way. There are multiple ice cream and candy shops as well so you can see what is around when you are feeling like it's time for whatever you want to eat. There were waits at some of the popular places, but since we didn't have that much time we didn't wait around for those. There are plenty of places you can just pop in and grab a bite. (Disclaimer, Ive only been once as an adult, so maybe my experience was an anomaly). Also, a few streets of the Main Street we found some great antique shops with a cool Irish pub mixed in, food was good, crab cake was even better than the popular place on the main drag.

Agreed. O'Brien's Oyster Bar and Seafood Tavern is right there in DTA and my favorite was their Cuban sandwich with tater tots.

LOL, that is a flan, or maybe a flan pâtissier.

Although I will grant you that eating an entire flan would cause one to loaf about, or more likely just find a convenient horizontal resting spot - like a couch.

That looks unbelievably good. Does flan taste like French style cheesecake?

One place I rather like is Normandy Cafe on Main Street. Crepes of all types. Food is good. Service is usually good. You'll need reservations, especially for dinner.

As an aside, I was at Middleton Tavern (dock area) several months ago for lunch. I remembered it as a (mostly) seafood place. Now it seems to serve more pub-style food. Not bad, but I wasn't super impressed. Service was slow, food was just ok. But I may also have been there on an off day.

Picked up a cheesecake and a Key Lime Pie at Amish Market today - for my company classmates dinner tomorrow night. If you saw someone buying that combination while whispering BACON BACON BACON, it was probably me.
Hmmm…I was in there today too buying sticky pecan buns and yes, a fresh, hot pretzel log for myself. And a jar of the hot fire baby pickled beets for DH to make up for the fact I didn’t get him a pretzel log. “They don’t travel well” really means “it gets eaten in the car.”

Whenever I go into a new town, I like to try the smaller Mom & Pops.

My wife and I used to go into Manhattan often, and we would purposely go into a random 'no-name' restaurant each visit. We always found that no-name Mom & Pop Italian restaurants located at basement levels on a backstreet were all equally quite awesome. When you think about it, for an Italian restaurant to even survive in NYC, it HAS to be awesome.

We used the same strategy in Annapolis. Any crab shack in town is good or it would already be out-of-business. Having said that, my fave is Cantler's.
