I browsed this board two years ago when I began my application process. I’ve just finished up my doolie year, and would like to give back to the community by answering any questions about basic, doolie year, and life at the academy in general. I’m currently a 3 degree, ask any questions about my experiences or anything else you’d like to know. Best of luck to 2022 in this coming year.

For winter break, are you allowed to leave after finishing your finals? Or do you have to wait until the Winter break formally begins? This year is Dec. 16th.

I am planning a family vacation ahead of time. Thank you!

If I recall correctly, once you finish your finals you can leave. Cadets will have to get their leave orders prior to departing, so your cadet will have to plan on getting those early if they want to leave earlier than the norm. Once finals schedules are out, you have the option of rescheduling them to other open exam periods. If your cadet chooses to schedule them all within the first couple days, they can leave once they’re finished. Some choose to spread them out to have more studying time. All up to your cadets preferences.

Great! Thank you! Do you recall when the final schedule is out? September?

I believe they come out about a month before finals start, maybe a little bit earlier. End of October early November most likely.

You can always buy the return ticket now as you know that date...

The finals schedule typically opens up right after Labor Day for Cadet's to schedule their finals. Some Cadets like to rush and get them done as quickly as possible, while others spread them out. We two Cadets and they each do them differently........

Congratulations and thank you!! What should we expect for A-Day? I hear that folks pack picnic lunches and such. Which area are we allowed to picnic?

For my A-day, my father came to see me. We had the parade and right after we were dismissed to be with our family. My father brought packed lunches for myself and my roommates. We went back to my room and hung out there, talked and ate lunches. You’d be able to picnic either in your cadets room, the quads, probably even the athletic fields if you wanted to make that walk. Overall I only saw my father for about 3 hours before he had to go.

Thank you so much for the reply! From my understanding, yes it will be a short visit but we will have the chance to see the shoulder board ceremony. We originally said we wouldn’t because of the short time frame but realized we didn’t want to miss out.
