My daughters received today an invitation to attend the "United States Air Force Academy Class Appointee Event" but there's no official appointment. Instead, she was offered a Falcon Foundation Scholarship to go to an USAFA affiliated prep school. She still wants to go to USAFA and is considering applying to Randolph-Macon Academy in Virginia. Anyone has any experiences with the Falcon Scholarship? What is it like and what's the appointment rate? Any pros and cons? I know appointment to USAFA is not 100% guaranteed and you still have to go through the application and nomination process all over again. Also, anyone has insights Randolph-Macon Academy? Her back up plan is to attend Virginia Tech's Corp of Cadet which she already received admission to the school.

While RM is a great prep school, have her look into all the options. Each school has unique offerings. If they weren't good, they wouldnt be on the list!

My son attended Northwestern prep. He was not sponsored, and is still awaiting a possible appointment to USAFA. Not to take anything away from any of the other Prep programs at all, but NWP was really awesome for him. He LOVED it, did well, and made great friendships. I highly recommend the Durbecks and their program. I believe all of the sponsored preps on Falcon Foundation Scholarships at NWP were appointed, and pretty sure all would tell you they're better off for the experience, and the extra year.

If attending the USAFA is her goal then taking the Falcon Offer for prep school for a year is a no brainer.

I had a friend who went to RM on Falcon Foundation for prep. They loved it and it is a good school. I believe they said that out of the like 80 cadets that have attended for prep over the years, only a few have not received appointments, most of which were because the cadet realized that they did not want an appointment after all. The only con is if you believe starting USAFA later is a con. If anything, there are only really pros. You are way more prepared for the academy and are seen as a leader by others since you've got a year already.

My DD attended NWP on a FFS. She received her appointment in February and is currently finishing up the required college coursework. I recommend setting up a one-on-one with Mrs. Durbeck at NWP to get the full scoop. Also look at the info on the Falcon Foundation website. You'll find the appointment/retention trends for past years there. Do the same with the other schools, too. She'll find the best fit. As has been said many times, the FFS is a golden ticket. Good luck and congrats....FFS are a rare and unique opportunity.
