My son received his NROTC/Marine option scholarship last year. He didn't apply until December because his first choice was USNA. His application was reviewed in February and he was notified (by phone) of his award by the captain of the local recruiting station in late March. The paperwork arrived in mid-April. His online status changed right after he was notified by phone.
I have heard anecdotally that for every Marine option scholarship awarded, there are six Navy scholarships. That's strictly hearsay, but a person from Pensacola did confirm that there are many more Navy scholarships than Marine. He is a psychology major, which didn't seem to negatively impact his selection.
Hopefully this helps!
