Anyone here receive an appointment through the JRTOC/ROTC route? We are waiting to hear and not sure if DS missed that bandwagon. Do they only hand them out around this time filling the quota early?

These appointments are decided very late in the cycle. Probably March or April before you hear. In fact, for any nom source you shouldn't expect to hear before Feb, although a few will hear sooner

If you mean a JROTC/ROTC nomination, only 20 appointments can be charged to that source.

As noted above, any appointments charged to that nom source tend to show up later rather than sooner in the cycle. That is essentially a national competition, assessing all candidates with that nom, which means they may wait until all applications are in. Now, if there is a candidate who not only walks on water but invented it, the SA might go ahead and make the offer of appointment.

Of course, it is ideal if the candidate has also obtained noms from Sens/Rep and applied for VP, plus any other source. That gives the SA, if they want to offer an appointment, more options as to where to charge the appointment.

Hi, yes DS was appointed with only the JROTC nom. We just received the official word last week. He had not heard back or finished interviewing for the Congress noms, so he did not receive one.

Do VP nominations get awarded later in the cycle as well?

Congratulations! Did you find out through his portal or via mail?

Yes, it seems so, observing when they show up in the self-reported appointment threads here, though those typically only reflect 10-15% of each year’s class.

I suspect the SA sits on those, using them for candidates they want but who have not obtained a nom from other sources. There are only a handful for each class.

Is it possible for someone who has received a JROTC nomination to receive an appointment through their congressional district slot as opposed to the JROTC/ROTC route?

And thank you, your information on this process is extremely informative!

SAs encourage applicants to apply for all nom sources for which they are eligible. A candidate should apply for Sens/Rep and VP at a minimum, and any others for which they are eligible. If the SA wants a particular candidate, it gives them flexibility in where they can charge the appointment to.

Note USCGA is not required to participate in the nomination process, and USMMA does not have certain nom sources. The DoD SAs have the same nom sources.

Go plow though that link I provided.

Thank you- DS just had the senators interview and next week will be local congressman. I was just curious if he doesn’t receive those nominations, if he would still be able to receive the congressional slot with his JROTC nomination. Thank you for the help!

Ah, I think I understand what you are asking. If his name is not on Senators’ or Representative’s slates, then he did not receive a nomination from those nom sources. That door is closed. The JROTC/ROTC nom is given to all who are eligible for it and nominated, but only a certain number of appointments can be charged to that nom source.

Think of the nom sources as a bunch of buckets. Each bucket can have appointments charged to it. The candidates in that bucket compete for the available appointments for that bucket. Candidates can exist in multiple buckets at the same time.

And now I understand, thank you very much!

To piggyback here and provide a specific example, a candidate was appointed to USNA one year on 7 Dec which was well prior to the Senator's and Congressman's slates being finalized much less announced. By the time all was said and done, the Candidate had 3 nominations, a Presidential, a Senatorial and a Congressional. Obviously, since the latter two had not been decided on 7 Dec, USNA made the offer with just the Presidential available but leaving the door open to use the others if necessary to bring in the people that it most wanted. If there were candidates or even a single candidate with only a presidential that they REALLY wanted, they could use the Congressional or Senatorial.

He received a phone call from local congressman's office congratulating him (even though he had not yet interviewed with the local COM), and it showed up in his portal 2 days later. The BFE came two days after that. He had interviewed with both Senators, and one emailed saying that since he had a JROTC nom and an appointment already, they were going to defer to that.

DS received an appointment with a JROTC nomination. His appointment showed up in his portal the same day Army beat Navy when they played at Michie during Covid. We thought that was so fitting. He also received a MOC nomination, but it came after the appointment.

My appointment was charged to my ROTC nom, got it on 1 April. For any college students lurking out there... expect to hear late if that's the route that USMA decides for you. They try to pretty much finish charging appointments to congressional slots before getting to ROTC slots.

Hi! Just want to add my experience onto what others have shared. I got both a JROTC nomination and principal nomination from my MOC. I received my JROTC nomination around August/September (I had my JROTC teacher submit his nomination in June/July of that year), and then received my Pnom in November. I was appointed that December. Like others said, there are only a certain number of slots for JROTC/ROTC nominations, and they usually are given out rather earlier in the year.

Hope this helps!
