Hey everyone, I am writing this message to anyone who hasn't received an appointment or has been denied. On April 21st I was denied from USAFA. It was the biggest blow I have faced so far, and really just struck a nerve.

Fast forward a few weeks, and, today, I just received a letter of acceptance. Just remember that anything is possible. Keep your hopes up!!!

Congrats! That is really good news for you. I'm thinking that their admission is so messed up this year. They are very slow and send emails to ppl who didn't even get the nomination letter to accept/deny, rejected the admission, and send the acceptance later. I have not heard any colleges reject first and then send an acceptance letter later (unless appealed). What do you think about their admission process?

@Oliverdad - it is normal for a student to receive a decline notification in April, but potentially a later offer of appointment. It is not super common, but does happen every admissions cycle. There are many reasons for this, but generally revolve (at this time of the cycle) around a qualified appointee declining their appointment because they accepted another appointment from a different school. This may require them to circle back through a nomination slate to find the next qualified applicant, or work their way down the qualified alternate National Wait List. Same thing happened to me more than 20 years ago. Students need some form of clarity on their status and mid April decline notifications allow students to move onto Plan B.

In the military, NO does not always mean NO forever - it may mean you are the wait list and that it is a NO for right now.

exactly... would make for a much less stressful process
To inform a candidate that they are "waitlisted" could imply that they are on the selection list, they're just going to have to wait a bit.

USAFA doesn't do that. They "rack and stack" every fully qualified (think 3-Q) candidate and then go down the list and make offers. As offers are accepted/declined, the line moves down to the next 3Q person. Nobody is "waitlisted" they're just on the list in order of qualification.

That's probably why they don't "officially waitlist" candidates.

Just my thoughts..

If 100 students were considered waitlisted, but only 10 eventually receive the call, is it fair to the other 90 to be left in a limbo status? My belief is that they rip the bandaid in April to signify that it is unlikely to happen this year -- move on to Plan B. Then, for those who do get the call, it is hopefully viewed as a welcome last minute surprise.

It does cause the roller coaster of emotions, but at some level, I do understand the challenge each school has.

It's a matter of semantics, I suppose. Good to be learning the process now. In the traditional sense if I see 'declined' I'm thinking no chance this time. Move on to plan B, make deposits by the 1 May deadline to a University, look for a residence, decompress from the SA process, book flights, contact ROTC unit, etc... Then NO! We want you here for BCT next month. I suppose it finds the Semper Gumby candidates. Looking forward to next cycle! Should be fun!

Waiting is strenuous!
  • It is very unlikely that a declined nominee will subsequently get an appointment offer. Although it may happen, don’t plan on it. Nominees have to be prepared for a Plan B.
  • Not all appointment offers are based on order-of-merit. By federal law, the answer to the order-of-merit question may be dependent on the nomination category. Not all categories require selection based solely on order of merit. As a minimum, the nomination process itself creates geographical priorities. Additionally, a nominating authority (Congressman/woman/Senator) isn’t required to consider order-of-merit in making nomination recommendations/priorities.
  • If order-of-merit were used to support all appointments, there would be no discussion regarding preferences for recruited athletes, diversity nominees, male vs. female nominees, or needs of the USAF.
  • Someday, the selection process may be based solely on order-of-merit, but we are not there today.

Exact same thing happened to my son 3 years ago. You can do a search and find my post from then. In two weeks he gets his senior ring. Time sure does fly by. Good luck to you.
